Woman Tells Her Date He’s “Giving Her The Ick” For Not Tipping 20% After $190 Dinner

A tipping debate changed the tone of the whole evening.

A nice dinner date is usually meant to be simple. Good food, good conversation, and a chance to spend time together without overthinking anything.

But sometimes a small moment at the end of the night can change the entire mood.

One 26-year-old man recently shared a situation from a Friday night date with a woman he had been seeing for about six months. Wanting to do something thoughtful, he made a reservation at a relatively nice restaurant and planned the evening himself.

The night seemed to be going well.

They ordered food, had a couple of drinks, and spent the evening talking and enjoying each other’s company. Nothing felt tense or awkward while they were sitting at the table.

Then the bill arrived.

Without really thinking about it, he placed his card down and waited for the receipt to come back. A moment later, his phone buzzed with a credit card notification showing the charge was around $190. It surprised him a little, and he casually commented that dinner ended up costing more than he expected.

His date responded by saying she was used to dinners costing even more with past partners.

He brushed the comment off and started filling out the tip line on the receipt. Since the service had been good, he was ready to leave what he felt was a reasonable tip.

That’s when the conversation suddenly shifted.

When she saw the amount he wrote down, she corrected him and said he should leave 20 percent instead. What followed was a tense exchange about tipping expectations, money, and what people should consider standard when dining out.

By the end of the night, the disagreement had completely changed the tone of the date.

“I agree with her one point, if you can't afford the full monte (dinner & 20%), you shouldn't be dining at that restaurant.”

Money can be one of the most uncomfortable topics in relationships, especially when expectations around things like tipping aren’t the same.

For him, covering the dinner already felt generous, and the tip he left seemed reasonable. For her, tipping 20 percent was simply the baseline and anything less felt embarrassing.

Neither of them expected the moment to turn into such a big disagreement, but it clearly changed how they saw the situation and each other.

What do you think about this situation? Was his tip perfectly reasonable, or was she right to expect the full 20 percent? Share your thoughts in the comments.
