Disney and ESPN Turned a Halloween Visit Into a New Choice for Kids at Connecticut Children’s

Disney and ESPN debuted Mickey and sports-themed hospital wear at Connecticut Children’s during a Halloween event for patients.

Mickey Mouse did more than stop by a children’s hospital in Connecticut this week. A Halloween celebration at Connecticut Children’s also introduced new ESPN and Mickey & Friends hospital gowns and pants, giving young patients a fresh way to choose something familiar during care.

What changed on Thursday

Connecticut Children’s teamed up with Starlight Children’s Foundation, ESPN and The Walt Disney Company for a Thursday Halloween event for young patients and their families. About 100 inpatient and outpatient children took part.

The biggest addition was the debut of new ESPN and Mickey & Friends hospital gowns and pants. Children were able to pick designs featuring recognizable characters and brands, part of an effort to bring more play, self-expression and a sense of normalcy into hospitalization.

The celebration also included Halloween costumes, Mickey Mouse plush toys, activities and an in-person visit from Mickey Mouse. Patients who could not attend the main event were not left out. Mickey also visited children in their hospital rooms.

Who it affects, and why Disney and its partners say it matters

The change directly affects children receiving care at Connecticut Children’s, along with their families, by adding more choice to the hospital experience. Organizers described that choice as more than decorative.

Starlight said something as simple as selecting a gown with a familiar character or brand can help a child feel more comfortable and regain a sense of control during hospitalization. The foundation also said those familiar designs can help open conversations with healthcare teams, making it easier to build trust and helping children feel more confident and engaged in their care.

Hospital leaders made a similar point. Connecticut Children’s said illness, treatment and daily routines can leave children with little control, and that choosing a gown can give them a voice and a sense of ownership. Staff at the hospital added that children do not stop being children when they become patients, and that play and joy are an important part of care.

ESPN also framed the event as part of using sports to create moments of happiness for children going through difficult circumstances. The visit also connects to a broader effort by ESPN, Disney and ABC to support children and families. Through the Pediatric Cancer Initiative, the companies are raising $10 million for pediatric cancer research through the V Foundation ahead of Super Bowl LXI on ESPN, ABC and Disney+.
