Solo Is Back, but Not in Theaters: Lucasfilm Sets a 2027 Star Wars Sequel Comic

Lucasfilm has confirmed the first official Solo sequel, a fall 2027 comic following Han, Chewbacca and Lando after the film.

After years of looking like the one Star Wars movie Disney would leave behind, Solo is getting a follow-up. Lucasfilm says the story will continue not on screen, but in a comic that picks up Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian after the 2018 film.

Solo gets a sequel, just not as another movie

Lucasfilm confirmed at New York Comic-Con 2026 that Solo: A Star Wars Story is finally receiving an official sequel. The big change is the format. Instead of another theatrical release starring Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover, the continuation will arrive as a comic called Star Wars: Smugglers & Scoundrels: The Black Sun Eclipse.

The project is scheduled for fall 2027 through Mad Cave Studios' Papercutz label. That makes it the first official sequel to the 2018 film's story, but in publishing rather than live action.

The announcement stands out because Solo had long looked finished. The film cast Ehrenreich as a younger Han Solo, Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra. It earned about $393 million worldwide against a reported production budget of around $300 million, and once marketing costs and theaters' shares were considered, it became a major financial disappointment. Production was also troubled, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leaving during filming and Ron Howard stepping in to complete the movie.

What the new story will cover

The comic is set two years after Solo and reunites Han, Chewbacca and Lando for another adventure. This time, the trio owes money to Black Sun, which was described as a powerful criminal organization operating throughout the galaxy.

Han believes he has a way out of the situation, but an approaching eclipse complicates his plan. Adam Lance Garcia is writing the comic, with art by Liana Kangas.

For fans who wanted the film's loose ends to keep moving, this is the concrete update. It brings back the core group from Solo without sending them back to theaters.

Who it affects, and what it does not change

The news is aimed squarely at Star Wars fans who have waited for any continuation of Solo, especially those hoping to see more of Han, Lando and Chewbacca. What changes is the medium. What does not change is Lucasfilm's theatrical plan for these characters, because no new Solo movie was announced.

The reveal also leaves the separate Lando project in the same place. Donald Glover has remained connected to it, and it originally took shape as a Disney+ series before shifting toward a theatrical film, but Lucasfilm still has not confirmed a release date.

More broadly, the move shows Lucasfilm is willing to revisit an older story through comics as it enters a new chapter under Dave Filoni. On the film side, the next announced theatrical release remains Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, which is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
