Disney Plus’ New Darkwing Duck Begins in a World That Forgot Its Hero

Disney has confirmed a new Darkwing Duck series for Disney Plus, with Mark Hamill leading a cast that includes Seth Rogen and Lizzy Caplan.

Disney has confirmed that Darkwing Duck is coming back in a new series for Disney Plus, giving the long-running character another standalone shot after his earlier return in DuckTales. The revival starts with a twist: Drake Mallard has spent 35 years stuck in an alternate world where nobody knows his superhero history.

What changed with Darkwing Duck

The new Disney Plus series brings Drake Mallard back as Darkwing Duck and sends him into a story that reaches beyond a simple nostalgic return. According to Disney’s synopsis, he is pulled back into action by a rebellious teenager named Duckie, who does know all about his past as a hero.

That setup also reconnects Darkwing with major figures from the original run. Disney says villains including Negaduck and Megavolt will return, along with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana. This time, the stakes are larger than a single city, with the story centered on saving the universe.

For Disney fans, the biggest immediate change is that Darkwing is moving from occasional comeback appearances to a full new series built around him. Disney has not announced a release date.

Who is in it, and what it means for fans

Mark Hamill is set to voice Drake Mallard and Darkwing Duck. The cast also includes Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard and Lilimar as Duckie. Disney also named Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich and Nat Faxon as part of the series.

The project also has a direct link to the original cartoon. Disney said creator Tad Stones consulted on the new show, and Stones said he was excited to see the character return in a new series.

Darkwing Duck first premiered in 1991 and ran for 91 episodes across Disney Channel, ABC and syndication. The character also appeared in NES and Game Boy games, as well as Disney comics. Jim Cummings voiced Darkwing in the original series, while Chris Diamantopoulos took on the role in the 2017 DuckTales reboot.
