Female Doctor Gets Invited To Dinner By Her Fiancé And Future In-Laws Only To Find Out She Has To Pay For The Entire Bill
Shame on this woman's SO and his family.
When dining with a group, it can sometimes get awkward when you finally receive the tab. Generally speaking, when dining with parents, they would offer to pay for the entire bill or split it according to who ordered what.
However, according to a female doctor's experience, this was not the case when she was invited to a New Year's Eve dinner with her fiancé's family. The toxic future in-laws expected her to shoulder the entire restaurant bill.
Reddit user Footingbills321 shared her experience via the popular subreddit AITA. Everything started great during that dinner. Her SO's family ordered a lot of food, drinks, and desserts.
Then it was finally time to pay. She pulled her wallet out, expecting that they would go Dutch. But to her surprise, her SO's parents didn't bring any money with them.
Her SO, who didn't have a job, left his wallet at home. What was she to do?
It was an expensive dinner, and her SO's parents had the audacity to order those meals, expecting her to pay. Then her fiancé's dad even said this:
"Alright, so I guess we should let the doctor pay!" She expected to pay only for her part.
And she wasn't willing to shoulder such an expensive dinner. The dinner ended with her walking out of the restaurant.
Now, the community decides who's in the wrong here.
We wonder if they're still loveable at this point.
Footingbills321Yikes!
Footingbills321Anyone would be taken aback by this.

She'd probably be willing to pay if it weren't this extravagant.
Footingbills321
So, it's her fault now?
Footingbills321
Her question.
Footingbills321
It's probably a good thing that they're not married yet.

She'd be put in this situation countless times if she marries the guy.

Some Redditors believe the guy is just in it for the money. She is a doctor, after all!

The original poster needs to break off the engagement.

She needs to reconsider.

The parents are so ridiculous.
TheSilverNoble
The right etiquette is to go Dutch.
matlynar
What the dad said was just way out of line.
Laurelinn
True! They only need to transfer the money to her. So why force her to pay for the ultra-expensive dinner by herself?
Miglin
This would have been interesting.
harbinger06
The parents aren't willing to pay; that's why.

The foreseeable future

This family is the only one that expects the invitee to pay up.

Scammers is the right word indeed! They're a family of scammers!

The marriage isn't worth it.

She has to dump him now, or she'll have expensive dinners to pay for in the future.
type1error
Uh oh! We hope it doesn't come to that.
zuma15
They obviously planned it.

The parents' "brilliant" idea

The original poster needs to run for the hills.

Redditors agree that the original poster isn't the a**hole in the situation.
No matter what etiquette book you read, you'll never find one that can defend the behavior of this thick-skinned family. The least they could do is pay for what they ordered.
She probably did herself a favor by walking out. And she probably needs to walk out of her fiancé's life as well.
The sooner, the better! Because at this point, it seems that it's not only the guy who's taking advantage of what she's earning.
