Etiquette Clash: Disagreeing with Moms Dinner Rules at Family Celebration

AITAH for challenging my mom's strict dinner rules during a celebratory family meal at a fancy restaurant, leading to tension and differing opinions on etiquette?

A 28-year-old woman thought a fancy promotion dinner would be a classy little victory lap, until her mom turned it into an etiquette drill. No phones, elbows off the table, and everyone in formalwear, apparently even if you are just trying to breathe in a slightly snug dress.

At the restaurant, OP discreetly unzipped her dress by an inch because the fit was making her miserable. It lasted all of two seconds, because her mom noticed, whispered that it was disrespectful, and then shushed her when OP tried to explain. Meanwhile, her sister’s husband casually started sharing funny videos, and the whole table went from tense to laughing, until Mom finally snapped into silent fury and even corrected Grandma’s elbow like it was a crime scene.

By the end of the night, OP wasn’t just uncomfortable, she was accused of ruining the “decorum,” and the family celebration did not end well.

I (28F) recently celebrated my promotion with a family dinner at a fancy restaurant, attended by my parents, grandmother, sister, and her husband. My mom is all about etiquette and creating a perfect image in public.

She's a stickler for table manners and appearance, which usually leads to tense family dinners. This time, she had strict rules: no phones, elbows off the table, and everyone must dress formally.

For background, I bought a beautiful dress for the occasion, but I didn't have time to get it tailored, so it was a bit snug. While at the restaurant, enjoying our meal, I felt uncomfortable due to the tight dress.

I discreetly unzipped it by an inch for relief, as no one would notice. But my mom saw and immediately whispered that I was being disrespectful and inappropriate.

I tried to explain, but she shushed me. The tension escalated when my sister's husband, who is a bit of a rebel, started sharing funny videos on his phone.

My mom glared at him, but my sister laughed, and soon we were all enjoying the jokes. Mom got visibly upset but didn't say anything.

Later, when my grandmother accidentally put her elbow on the table, Mom corrected her, causing Grandma to feel embarrassed. At the end of the dinner, my mom pulled me aside, criticizing my attire and attitude, saying I disrespected her rules.

I argued that we were celebrating a joyful occasion and should relax a bit. She accused me of ruining the dinner's decorum.

So, AITAH for disagreeing with my mom during the special dinner? I value her perspective but feel she's too rigid at times.

Right away, the “no phones, elbows off, formal only” rules set the stage for OP’s mom to police everything, including OP’s already-questionable dress fit.

That’s when OP quietly unzipped her dress for relief, and her mom saw it and immediately treated it like a public scandal.

Then the sister’s husband breaks the phone rule with funny videos, and the table laughs while Mom glares like she’s watching a crime unfold.

By the time Mom corrects Grandma’s elbow and pulls OP aside afterward, the dinner stops being a celebration and turns into an interrogation about “attitude” and “decorum.”

The family dinner did not end well, because OP got punished for being uncomfortable while everyone else got a pass for breaking the rules.
