Family Beach Vacation Ruined: AITA for Canceling Trip Over Sisters Uninvited Guest?
"AITA for canceling our family beach vacation due to my sister inviting her ex's new girlfriend last minute? Reddit weighs in on the fallout."
A family beach vacation was supposed to be the easy part, until one last-minute invite turned it into a full-blown mess. A woman had spent weeks planning a trip with her parents, siblings, and their partners, only to learn that her sister had added her ex-husband's new girlfriend to the guest list without asking anyone first.
That decision set off a chain reaction of hurt feelings, awkward family politics, and a cancellation nobody saw coming. The sister thought everyone should just move on, but the rest of the family was left dealing with the fallout of a surprise no one agreed to.
Now the trip is off, the family is split, and the question is whether she went too far or simply refused to be blindsided. Here's the full story.
Original Post
I (35F) planned a family beach vacation with my parents, siblings, and their partners for weeks. It was meant to be a special time for all of us to relax and bond after a tough year.
We had everything sorted - accommodations, activities, even meal plans. Quick context: My sister, let's call her Emily, went through a divorce last year.
We haven't seen much of her ex-husband since the split, which was a relief for everyone. However, two days before our trip, Emily dropped a bombshell.
She casually mentioned that she invited her ex-husband's new girlfriend, Sarah, to join us because 'she's cool and we all need to move on.' I was shocked. She didn't even bother asking me or informing the rest of the family beforehand.
I was furious. I told Emily that it was incredibly insensitive of her to spring this on us last minute.
I explained how uncomfortable and awkward it would be for everyone, especially with the emotional history involved. She brushed it off, saying I was overreacting.
I couldn't fathom spending a week pretending everything was fine with the ex-husband's new partner. So, I made a tough decision.
I canceled the entire vacation. I didn't want to deal with the tension and drama that Emily's invitation stirred up.
My parents and siblings were disappointed, but they understood my reasons. Emily is now upset with me, claiming I ruined everything.
I feel torn between standing my ground and potentially damaging family relationships. So AITA?

This also reminds me of the OP debating whether to exclude their brother after a 3-year disappearance.
