Family Dinner Chaos: AITA for Changing Menu Last Minute for Vegan, Gluten-Free Guest?
AITA for changing our family dinner menu last minute to accommodate a guest's dietary restrictions, causing chaos and upsetting some family members?
Family dinner is supposed to be the one night everyone pretends they’re still close, even if the conversation gets weird and the table is basically a battlefield of side dishes.
This year, OP (37F) is hosting their annual tradition where everyone brings something, and it’s already stressful because the menu usually leans hard on meat and gluten. Then cousin’s new partner arrives, and it turns out she’s vegan and gluten-free due to severe allergies, which instantly forces OP to rethink the whole spread. OP makes a split-second decision to swap in vegan and gluten-free options, but the minute the favorites go missing, the rest of the family starts acting like the holiday got stolen.
Now it’s not just dinner chaos, it’s a full-on argument about whose needs matter.

So I'm (37F) hosting our annual family dinner - a tradition in our family where everyone brings a dish. This year, my cousin's new partner, who I didn't know much about, was joining us for the first time.
As everyone arrived, my cousin mentioned that her partner is vegan and gluten-free due to severe allergies. This threw me off as our menu heavily featured meat and gluten-based dishes.
In a split-second decision, I decided to swap out some dishes for vegan and gluten-free options to accommodate them. Chaos ensued as some family members were upset about the last-minute changes and missing their favorite dishes.
My cousin's partner was grateful but others felt their preferences weren't considered. Now, some family members are upset with me for altering our treasured menu.
Am I the jerk for prioritizing my cousin's partner's dietary restrictions over our family's traditional dishes?

It echoes the case of a vegan cousin who refused to accommodate a vegan, gluten-free guest, and Reddit tore into the tradition versus inclusivity debate.

Cousin drops the vegan and gluten-free bomb about her partner’s severe allergies, and OP’s “easy night” turns into a menu emergency.
OP swaps out the meat and gluten dishes fast, and suddenly the family members who expected their usual favorites are glaring like they ordered wrong at a restaurant.
Cousin’s partner is grateful, but the rest of the table starts complaining that their preferences got bulldozed by last-minute changes.
By the time everyone’s done snacking and side-eyeing, OP has to face the fact that the cherished tradition might be the real thing getting broken.
