Family Dinner Disaster: WIBTA for Storming Out After Sisters Insult?
WIBTA for leaving our family dinner after my sister made a rude comment about my cooking and ruined the evening?
A 28-year-old woman refused to sit through a Sunday dinner after her sister turned her homemade vegetarian meal into a roast session. It was supposed to be a warm, sacred night, the kind where everyone shows up and nobody brings drama to the table.
She spent the whole day cooking roast chicken, making a homemade pie, and even crafting a vegetarian option specifically for Kate, her 30-year-old sister who recently went vegetarian. The moment Kate took a bite, she wrinkled her nose and said it tasted like cardboard, then kept sliding in snide comments all through the meal while their parents tried to smooth things over.
Then OP snapped, stormed off to her room, and the family dinner did not end well.

I (28F) come from a tight-knit family where Sunday dinners are a sacred tradition. This past Sunday, it was my turn to host.
I spent all day preparing an elaborate meal - roast chicken with all the fixings, a homemade pie for dessert, and even made a vegetarian option for my sister, Kate (30F), who recently decided to go vegetarian. I put a lot of effort into catering to everyone's preferences and dietary needs.
As we sat down to eat, everything seemed fine until Kate took her first bite of the vegetarian dish. She immediately wrinkled her nose and loudly proclaimed, 'This tastes like cardboard.
Are you sure you followed the recipe?' Her comment stung, especially since I had spent hours in the kitchen trying to make it perfect for her. My parents awkwardly tried to diffuse the tension, but Kate kept making snide remarks about the food throughout the meal.
It got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. I excused myself from the table, went to my room, and locked the door.
I could hear the muffled sounds of my family discussing my sudden departure. After a while, there was a knock on my door, and my mom asked me to come back to the table and not let Kate's comments ruin our family time.
I was still hurt and upset, so I refused to rejoin them for the rest of the dinner. Eventually, they finished without me.
Now, Kate has been texting me, saying I overreacted and should have just brushed off her comments. She's making me out to be the bad guy for ruining the family dinner.
I'm torn between feeling hurt by her insensitivity and guilty for leaving the dinner abruptly. WIBTA for walking out, or was it justified given her behavior?
So AITA?

Right after Kate called the vegetarian dish “cardboard” and questioned the recipe, OP’s perfectly planned dinner started to feel like an ambush.
This same tension shows up in a sister who criticized cooking and got excluded from family dinner.
While their parents tried to diffuse the tension, Kate kept throwing out remarks, and OP eventually couldn’t take it anymore.
OP excused herself, locked herself in her room, and refused to come back even after her mom knocked and asked her to protect “family time.”
Now Kate is texting that OP overreacted, even though Kate was the one who kept insulting the food after being catered to.

The real question is whether Kate gets to insult OP’s cooking all night and still expect her to stay.
