Family Feud: AITA for Banning Sister from Traditional Cooking Night?

AITA for enforcing strict theme rules during family cooking nights after a disastrous French cuisine attempt, sparking a debate on forgiveness and second chances?

A 28-year-old guy tried to keep his family’s monthly cooking night on track, and it still turned into a full-on family feud. He already nailed a Mexican fiesta theme last month, and everyone was genuinely into it. So when the turn rolled back around to him, he expected the same respect for the plan.

This time, he picked BBQ, planned to grill ribs, and had everything lined up. Then his sister, 26, texted him that she wanted to “redeem herself” by hosting with her revised French cuisine dishes. The catch, she had previously ignored the French theme and served something so bad the whole table was disappointed, and now he’s saying no.

Now the question is whether banning her from traditional cooking night is petty, or totally justified after that French disaster.

So I'm (28M) and my family has this tradition where we have a monthly cooking night. Each month, a different family member gets to choose a theme and host the cooking night.

Last month was my turn, and I decided on a Mexican fiesta theme. I spent hours preparing authentic Mexican dishes and everyone loved it.

This month, it was my sister's (26F) turn. She decided on a French cuisine theme, which I was excited about because I love French food.

However, when the cooking night came, my sister completely disregarded the theme and made a disastrous attempt at a classic French dish. It was nearly inedible, and everyone was disappointed.

Fast forward to this month, it's my turn again. I chose a BBQ theme because who doesn't love a good BBQ?

I was all set to grill up some delicious ribs, but my sister texted me saying she wanted to redeem herself and host this month's cooking night with her revised French cuisine dishes. I had to put my foot down.

I reminded her of how she completely missed the mark last time and how important it is to stick to the chosen theme. I told her that this month is my turn, and I don't want her to ruin it with another failed attempt at French dishes.

My family is upset with me for being too harsh and not giving my sister a chance to make up for her past mistakes. They think I'm being unreasonable and should let her cook whatever she wants.

But I feel like she had her chance and failed, and this month should be about my theme. So, AITA?

NTA - Your sister had her chance and blew it. Stick to your theme and enjoy your BBQ night!

Last month’s Mexican fiesta went so well that OP thought the family would finally follow the rules of the theme game.

YTA - It's just a cooking night, let your sister try again. Family is about forgiveness and second chances.

NAH - It's understandable you want to stick to the theme, but also give your sister a chance to redeem herself. Compromise and let her make a dish alongside your BBQ.

But when sister’s “French cuisine” night turned into an almost inedible mess, OP didn’t just get disappointed, he got burned.

NTA - Your sister needs to learn to respect the chosen themes. Enjoy your BBQ without her French disasters.

It also echoes the fight between OP and their mom during cooking night, over boundaries and equal participation.

YTA - It's just food, let your sister cook what she wants. Family cooking nights are about fun, not strict rules.

ESH - Your sister should have respected the theme, but you should also be more forgiving. Maybe have a mix of BBQ and French dishes?

That’s why BBQ night is different, OP is ready to grill ribs, and sister is trying to hijack the schedule with her French comeback.

NAH - Family cooking nights should be about enjoying time together. Let your sister cook her dishes, and you can still grill your BBQ. Variety can be fun!

YTA - Lighten up a bit. Let your sister showcase her cooking, and you can still have your BBQ another time. It's all about family bonding, not strict themes.

Now everyone’s mad at OP for being “too harsh,” even though sister already had her chance to prove she could follow the theme.

NTA - Your theme, your rules. Your sister should understand that sticking to the theme is part of the fun. Enjoy your BBQ night!

NAH - Maybe suggest a compromise where your sister makes a few French dishes alongside your BBQ. That way, everyone gets to enjoy both cuisines. Communication is key!
