Family Feud: AITA for Standing Up to Sister-in-Laws Vacation Demands?
AITA for refusing to plan our family trip with my overbearing sister-in-law? Family tensions rise as I prioritize my wife and daughter's needs over Karen's demands.
It starts with something that sounds harmless, a family vacation plan, and then it turns into a full-on family feud worthy of a rerun of everyone’s worst vacation opinions.
This year, OP (30M) is in charge of planning a trip with his wife’s family, including her parents and siblings, plus everyone’s kids. Immediately, sister-in-law Karen (32F) pushes for a beach resort anyway, dismisses the concerns, and calls it “her turn” to choose.
When OP proposes a vote to decide the destination, the argument explodes, and now Karen is threatening a separate trip.
Original Post
I (30M) am in charge of planning our family trip this year. For some context, my wife (28F) and I have been together for 5 years and have a 4-year-old daughter.
Every year, we take a trip with my wife's family, including her parents, siblings, and their families. Planning this year's vacation, I suggested going to a cozy cabin in the mountains, a location everyone seemed excited about.
However, my sister-in-law (32F), let's call her Karen, immediately had other ideas. Karen insisted on a beach resort, even though she knows my wife gets terrible sunburns and our daughter isn't a fan of swimming.
I politely explained our concerns, but she brushed them off, saying it's her turn to choose. Given the circumstances, I stood my ground and suggested we take a vote to decide the destination.
Karen was not happy and accused me of being selfish and ruining her long-awaited beach vacation. This led to a heated argument, with my wife supporting my decision.
It's causing tension within the family, and my in-laws are divided. Karen even threatened to plan a separate trip if we don't comply.
So AITA?

It’s like the brother who chose Disneyland over his sibling’s last-minute wedding invite.

OP’s cabin pitch went over well at first, but Karen shut it down fast with her “beach resort, my choice” energy.
OP explains the sunburn problem and their daughter’s dislike of swimming, and Karen still brushes it off like it’s not even relevant.
Once OP stands his ground and suggests a vote, Karen calls him selfish, and the whole family starts taking sides, including OP’s wife.
The tension spikes when Karen threatens to plan a separate trip, leaving the in-laws divided and everyone mad at OP’s “vote” idea.
What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
OP might have saved the trip, but he also just became the villain for Karen’s beach fantasy.
Before you pick sides, read how the OP handled the sister who demanded the cabin be shared.
