Family Feud: Refusing to Share Secret BBQ Sauce Recipe for Cook-off - AITAH?
AITAH for refusing to share my late grandmother's secret BBQ sauce recipe with my competitive sister-in-law?
A 29-year-old woman refused to hand over her late grandmother’s secret BBQ sauce recipe, and somehow that turned into a full-on family cook-off drama. Not because she’s stingy with food, but because this sauce is basically her family’s edible heirloom.
The twist is that her sister-in-law, 33, is suddenly all-in on competitive cooking and wants the recipe for an upcoming cook-off. OP says no for sentimental reasons and tradition, but the sister-in-law flips it into a fairness issue, calling her selfish and saying she’s ruining her chances of winning. Even worse, things got icy fast, with the sister-in-law going cold after the denial, while OP’s partner backs her.
Now OP is stuck wondering if protecting a family secret is worth the damage to her relationship.
Original Post
I (29F) come from a family that takes pride in our cooking, especially my late grandmother's BBQ sauce recipe. It's a closely guarded secret, passed down for generations.
My sister-in-law (33F) recently got into competitive cooking and has asked for the recipe to use in an upcoming cook-off. But I refused, explaining the sentimental value and tradition behind the recipe.
My sister-in-law got upset, claiming she should have access to it because she's family now. She even suggested that I'm being selfish and hindering her chances of winning.
My partner (31M) supports me, understanding the significance of the recipe. However, my sister-in-law won't let it go and keeps pushing for it.
I feel torn between honoring my family's tradition and potentially souring my relationship with my sister-in-law. She's been cold towards me ever since I denied her request.
So, AITA?

This is similar to the stepmom who demanded the family chili recipe for a cooking competition.

After OP shuts down the request for her grandmother’s sauce, the sister-in-law immediately acts like it’s a personal attack instead of a boundary.
The cook-off pressure ramps up when the sister-in-law starts pushing harder, using “I’m family now” as the argument.
OP’s partner backing her only makes the tension more obvious, since the sister-in-law has gone cold and stayed there.
By the time the sister-in-law keeps bringing it up, the BBQ sauce has stopped being a recipe and turned into a grudge.

The sauce isn’t the only thing getting served cold.
