Family Reunion Dilemma: Choosing My Pet Turtle Over My Family - AITA?

AITA for refusing to attend a family reunion that excludes my beloved pet turtle, sparking a debate on prioritizing pets as family members?

A 28-year-old woman refused to leave her pet turtle, Sheldon, behind for a week at her family’s beach house reunion, and now her whole extended group is acting like she’s the unreasonable one. To her, Sheldon is not a “pet,” he’s basically family, the same way you’d worry about a kid who can’t just hop in the car and go.

The complication? Her family has a long history of being anti-pet. They don’t get the bond, they think pets are a burden, and they’ve already declared a hard rule: Sheldon has to stay somewhere else while everyone else has fun. She’s tried explaining that a pet hotel feels like abandonment, but the “non-negotiable” line keeps getting repeated.

Now she’s stuck choosing between showing up and spending the whole week feeling guilty, or staying home and becoming the reason the reunion feels “off.”

So I'm (28F) and I have this adorable pet turtle named Sheldon. He's been with me for years, and I absolutely adore him.

My family is planning a big reunion at a beach house next month.

For me, Sheldon is family, and I can't imagine leaving him behind for a week while I go off to have fun. I've expressed my concerns to my family, but they insist it's a non-negotiable rule.

For background, my family has never been the most pet-friendly. They see pets as a burden and don't understand the bond I have with Sheldon.

It breaks my heart to think of leaving him in a pet hotel while I'm out having a good time with my family. I've tried to reason with them, explaining that Sheldon is like a child to me, but they won't budge.

I'm torn between skipping the reunion to stay with Sheldon or going and feeling guilty the whole time. I know they'll be disappointed if I don't show up, but I don't want to betray my little buddy.

So AITA?

She’s told them Sheldon is like a child to her, and her family’s response, the “non-negotiable” rule, is what really kicks off the drama.

The beach house timeline is locked in, and the fact they’ve never been pet-friendly makes her fear of leaving Sheldon with strangers feel extra brutal.

When she mentions the pet hotel option, the reunion stops sounding fun and starts sounding like a guilt trip she’s being forced to take.

With her family prepared to be disappointed either way, she has to decide whether she’s a bad daughter for missing the beach, or a bad “turtle parent” for leaving Sheldon behind.

Nobody wins this reunion if Sheldon gets treated like luggage.
