Friend Asks Me to Babysit Her Beloved Boa Constrictor While on Vacation - AITA for Refusing?

AITA for declining to pet-sit a friend's snake due to my fear? Mutual friends weigh in on whether my fear is justified or if I should have faced it for her sake.

A 27-year-old woman refused to babysit her friend’s beloved boa constrictor, and somehow that turned into a full-on drama with mutual friends weighing in. The snake in question? Rocky, a massive, frozen-rat-eating, heat-lamp-dependent roommate that her owner treats like family.

Here’s the complication: OP is terrified of snakes since a childhood zoo incident, and her friend knows it. Still, the friend asked for a week of snake sitting, then floated a compromise, feeding Rocky at her place every couple days. OP declined both times, and now people are calling her unreasonable, because “it’s just a snake,” not a living, slithery panic trigger.

And the worst part is, Rocky is not the only one getting fed here.

Original Post

I'm (27F) in a bit of a pickle with my friend (26F) over her pet snake. She has this massive boa constrictor named Rocky that she adores but can't take with her when she goes on vacation.

For background, I've always been terrified of snakes, ever since a childhood incident at the zoo. My friend knows this, we've joked about it before.

Anyway, my friend asked me to snake-sit for a week while she's away. She said it's just feeding Rocky some frozen rats, checking the heat lamps, basic stuff.

I immediately felt uncomfortable but told her I'd think about it. I considered facing my fear, doing something nice for a friend, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

I finally told her I couldn't watch Rocky. She was understanding but then asked if I could at least feed him at her place every couple days.

I still declined. She seemed disappointed and now, some of our mutual friends are saying I'm being unreasonable, that it's just a snake, not a big deal.

So, AITA? I feel bad for letting her down but I can't shake this fear.

OP’s fear of snakes dates back to that zoo incident, so when her friend asks for a week of Rocky duty, it lands like a personal attack.

A boa constrictor, like Rocky, can be an excellent pet for those who understand their needs and behaviors.

Potential pet sitters should educate themselves about the species before taking on the responsibility. Familiarizing oneself with the animal's habits and requirements can alleviate unnecessary fear and enhance the experience for both the sitter and the pet.

It’s a lot like this woman skipping Christmas over her toxic brother, except your “Rocky” factor is the fear.

After OP says she’ll think about it, her friend gets specific about feeding frozen rats and checking heat lamps, which makes the whole thing feel unavoidable.

When OP refuses again, even the “just feed him at my place every couple days” offer does not magically turn Rocky into a comfort animal.

That’s when the mutual friends step in, acting like OP should just power through while Rocky is literally the reason she can’t.</p>

In this intriguing situation, the complexities of pet ownership and friendship come to the forefront.

This scenario encapsulates the delicate balance between personal boundaries and the expectations that come with friendship. The woman's apprehension toward snakes is not merely a trivial fear; it likely stems from a significant past encounter, underscoring how deeply ingrained phobias can be and how they resist rational dismissal. The Reddit thread serves as a reminder that friends must engage in open dialogue about their comfort zones. Respecting these boundaries is crucial, as it can ultimately fortify the relationship instead of causing strain. In this case, the refusal to babysit the boa constrictor is not just a rejection of responsibility but a necessary assertion of personal limits.

OP might be the “bad friend” in their group chat, but she’s the one who has to sit with Rocky’s schedule.
