Friend Feeds Dog Non-Vegan Treats: WIBTA for Ending Pet-Sitting Duties?
Would you cancel a friend's pet-sitting after feeding your dog non-vegan treats and lying about it?
Some pet-sitting stories are cute until you remember dogs are not props, and “just a treat” can turn into a health problem fast. In this one, Luna is the whole universe for her owner, a 27NB who has her on a strict vegan diet because her stomach is sensitive. Alex agreed, acted totally fine during the trip, then got caught with non-vegan treat packets in the trash when the owner returned early.
It wasn’t even a sneaky accident, Alex finally admitted they gave Luna non-vegan treats because they felt bad watching Luna stare while they ate.
Original Post
So, I'm (27NB) and I have a lovely dog named Luna. She’s my everything and I always make sure to provide her with the best care possible.
Recently, I had a trip planned and asked my friend, let's call them Alex, to pet-sit Luna at my place. Alex agreed, knowing how important Luna is to me.
I specifically mentioned that Luna is on a strict vegan diet due to her sensitive stomach. Alex seemed fine with it.
During my trip, I asked Alex how things were going. They assured me everything was fine.
However, when I returned earlier than expected, I found non-vegan treats packets in the trash. I was shocked because Luna never had those treats before.
When I asked Alex, they denied giving Luna non-vegan treats and claimed they had no idea where those packets came from. Later, when pressed, Alex finally admitted that they gave Luna a few non-vegan treats because they felt bad seeing Luna watching them eat.
They didn't think it would harm Luna. I was upset by this breach of trust and the disrespect towards Luna's dietary needs.
I calmly asked Alex to leave, and I took over from there. Alex has been reaching out, apologizing and asking for another chance, but I feel betrayed.
Luna's health is my priority, and I can't risk someone not respecting that. WIBTA if I cancel all future pet-sitting duties with Alex and find a more trustworthy person to care for Luna?
The Breach of Trust
This situation hits hard because it’s not just about Luna’s diet; it’s about trust. OP clearly communicated Luna's strict vegan requirements due to her sensitive stomach. When Alex chose to ignore that and then lied about it, it raises serious questions about their friendship. Can you really trust someone with your pet if they disregard your rules and then deceive you about it?
The dynamic shifts dramatically when the betrayal is rooted in something as personal as caring for a beloved pet. Many pet owners will understand the emotional weight behind this. Pets aren’t just animals; they’re family, and this breach feels like a violation of that family bond.

Veganism and Pet Care: A Complicated Intersection
The OP's commitment to a vegan diet for Luna is more than a personal choice; it reflects a broader trend where pet owners increasingly align their pets' diets with their ethical beliefs. This adds another layer to the conflict. Alex’s decision to feed Luna non-vegan treats, despite knowing the dietary restrictions, isn't just a culinary mistake; it’s a disregard for OP's values.
This resonates with readers who feel strongly about animal rights or veganism, making the debate about whether Alex’s actions were just careless or fundamentally disrespectful. It’s a reminder that pet care often intersects with personal ethics, complicating the dynamics of friendships.

Community Reactions: Divided Opinions
The community response to this dilemma showcases how polarizing the issue can be. Some people sided with OP, emphasizing the importance of following dietary guidelines, especially when it comes to pets with specific needs. Others felt that OP was being overly dramatic, suggesting that it was just dog treats and not a life-or-death situation.
This divide highlights a common theme in pet ownership: the varying degrees of attachment and responsibility that people feel. For some, a pet's dietary restrictions are non-negotiable, while others view them as flexible. That difference in perspective can create significant tension in friendships.

The Moral Dilemma of Ending a Friendship
Deciding whether to end a friendship over this incident poses a moral dilemma. On one hand, OP has every right to feel betrayed and question their friendship with Alex. On the other, relationships often come with their own set of compromises and misunderstandings. The question becomes: can Alex redeem themselves after this mistake?
Many readers might grapple with the idea of forgiveness versus setting boundaries. If OP cuts ties, they may lose a friend, but if they overlook the issue, it might set a precedent for future breaches of trust. This situation beautifully encapsulates the messy, often contradictory nature of human relationships.
