Friend Mocked Me While Playing Apex Legends: AITA for Wanting to Stop Gaming with Him?
AITA for refusing to play Apex Legends with my friend after he mocked me about my gaming skills, highlighting the struggle of balancing friendship and self-respect.
A 27-year-old woman tried Apex Legends for the first time in years, and instead of getting encouragement, she got roasted. Her friend Mark, who’s been her buddy for six years, pushed her into a competitive match like it was a dare, not a hangout.
In the middle of the game, Mark kept mocking her aim and blaming her for losses. When she finally called him out, he shrugged it off as “her being too sensitive,” then acted like the whole thing was nothing worth bringing up again.
Now she’s stuck between protecting her feelings and preserving a friendship that usually feels solid, until Apex shows up.

So I'm (27F) and I've been friends with 'Mark' for six years now. We've always bonded over different hobbies, but he's really into competitive video games.
I, on the other hand, hate competitive games. Recently, Mark convinced me to try Apex Legends with him.
During one match, he kept making fun of my aim and blamed me for us losing. I tried to brush it off, but when I called him out on it, he just laughed and said I was being 'too sensitive'.
This really hurt me because I tried to step out of my comfort zone and he just made fun of me. I feel like he should have been more understanding and supportive, considering he knows how I feel about competitive games.
Now, I don't want to play Apex Legends with him anymore, but he's been acting like nothing happened. I feel conflicted because I value our friendship, but I also don't want to be belittled for trying something new.
Should I confront him about this or just let it go? So AITA?
Mocking, even if intended as playful teasing, can significantly strain friendships.

Mark convinced her to try Apex Legends, so she stepped out of her comfort zone and joined the lobby anyway.
Games like Apex Legends often serve as social platforms, where competition can sometimes overshadow camaraderie. Discussing what constitutes friendly competition versus hurtful teasing can create a more enjoyable environment. This approach promotes respect and strengthens bonds, helping both players feel valued and supported.

During that match, his comments about her aim turned “playful teasing” into straight-up blame when they lost.

After she confronted him, Mark laughed and dismissed it as her being “too sensitive,” like her reaction was the real problem.
To improve the gaming experience and maintain friendships, consider establishing a 'gaming code of conduct.' This could include guidelines on what topics are off-limits and how to give constructive feedback.
Successful relationships thrive on mutual respect and understanding. By openly discussing gaming dynamics, players can navigate competitive pressures while maintaining camaraderie. Setting these boundaries not only enhances enjoyment but also strengthens the friendship by promoting empathy and understanding.

Since then he’s been acting like nothing happened, while she’s deciding whether to keep showing up for Apex with him.

The Reddit thread highlights the delicate balance between friendship and self-respect, particularly in the competitive arena of gaming.
While teasing can often serve as a means to bond over shared experiences, this particular instance shows a profound lack of empathy and understanding. The article underscores the importance of recognizing when humor becomes hurtful, especially in competitive environments like gaming where emotions can run high. This is particularly true in high-stakes gaming situations, where the pressure to perform can intensify interactions. Maintaining a respectful and understanding dialogue is essential to preserve the integrity of the relationship and ensure that gaming remains a source of enjoyment rather than conflict.
She might be the one who needs a new duo partner, because Mark’s banter is costing her the friendship.
