Friend Wants to Adopt Pet Im Attached to: AITA for Saying No?
AITA for denying my friend's wish to adopt the stray cat I've grown to love deeply?
A 28-year-old man refused to let his friend adopt the stray cat he just saved, and now everyone is acting like it’s a personal attack. The cat, Whiskers, didn’t just become “a pet,” he became a whole emotional attachment situation.
Here’s the messy part, Maya, his close friend, shows up, falls instantly for Whiskers, and says she wants to adopt him because she’s been lonely. OP, who has been bonded with Whiskers since taking him in, hesitates and tells her he’s not ready to let the cat go, even though Maya would likely give him a good home.
Now OP is stuck wondering if he’s being selfish or if his bond with Whiskers actually matters in this story.

I (28M) have a close friend, let's call her Maya (26F), who's been wanting to adopt a new pet for a while. Recently, I found a stray cat in my neighborhood and decided to take it in, as I've always been a cat lover.
This cat, whom I named Whiskers, quickly became a huge part of my life. We bonded deeply, and I can't imagine parting with him.
Maya came over to my place and instantly fell in love with Whiskers. She expressed how much she wanted to adopt him, mentioning how she's been lonely and a pet would bring her so much joy.
I was taken aback and didn't know how to respond, as I had never anticipated this situation. I hesitated and told her that I wasn't ready to let go of Whiskers.
Maya was disappointed and couldn't understand why I wouldn't let her adopt him.
But deep down, I can't shake the feeling of attachment and love I have for him. I know Maya would provide a good home, but I'm struggling with the idea of losing Whiskers.
So, Reddit, given Maya's desire to adopt a pet and my strong bond with Whiskers, AITA for refusing to let my friend adopt the new pet I've grown attached to? I'm torn and need an outside perspective on this.

Maya didn’t ease in with a casual “maybe,” she came over and immediately fell for Whiskers, like the cat had a fan club.
Right after Maya says she’s lonely and wants the cat for joy, OP freezes and admits he’s not ready to part with Whiskers.
The disappointment hits fast, Maya can’t understand why OP won’t “just” let her adopt the stray he rescued.
And now OP is stuck replaying the whole moment, wondering if his attachment to Whiskers makes him the asshole.

He might not be refusing an adoption, he might be protecting the only bond Whiskers has ever given him.
