Friend Wants Chameleon at Rental: AITA for Saying No?
AITA for refusing to let my friend's pet chameleon stay at our vacation rental? Tension arises as rules clash with pet attachment - who's in the wrong?
A 28-year-old woman refused to bring a chameleon into a beach rental, and somehow that turned into a full-blown friendship drama.
Her childhood friend Sarah, 29, is inseparable from her pet chameleon, Charlie, who rides in a terrarium and basically lives her life. The complication? Sarah didn’t mention Charlie until they arrived at the rental, after the rules were already right there on the listing. When OP hesitated and said no, Sarah tried to bargain, claiming Charlie would be lonely in the car, and eventually agreed to leave him with her neighbor, but the vibe stayed tense the whole trip.
Now Sarah is telling mutual friends OP was heartless, and OP is left wondering if she really picked the rules over the friendship.
Original Post
I (28F) recently went on a vacation with my childhood friend, Sarah (29F), to a beach rental. Sarah is incredibly attached to her pet chameleon, Charlie, who goes everywhere with her.
However, the rental explicitly stated 'no pets allowed.' For background, Sarah knows about this rule but she thought bringing Charlie wouldn't be a big deal since he's small and stays in a terrarium. She didn't mention this to me until we arrived at the rental.
Upon seeing Charlie, I hesitated and gently told Sarah that the rental doesn't permit pets, even small ones. Sarah was taken aback and tried to persuade me, claiming Charlie would be lonely in the car.
I stood my ground, as I didn't want to risk violating the rental agreement and potentially facing consequences. Sarah seemed upset but ended up reluctantly agreeing to leave Charlie with her neighbor for the trip's duration.
Throughout the vacation, there was an underlying tension between us, making the trip less enjoyable. Now, Sarah is telling our mutual friends about the incident, portraying me as heartless for not accommodating Charlie.
She believes I prioritize rules over her feelings and Charlie's well-being. I understand her attachment to Charlie, but I also value respecting property rules.
So AITA?

It’s the same kind of boundary test as a friend asking to bring a pet lizard on a cross-country road trip.

Sarah shows up with Charlie in the terrarium, and OP immediately realizes they are already past the point of “oops, I forgot to mention it.”
OP tells Sarah the rental explicitly bans pets, and Sarah hits back with the car-lonely argument like that changes the agreement.
After the neighbor deal, the chameleon is temporarily sorted, but the friendship tension is not, which is why the trip feels awkward.
Now that Sarah has filled the mutual friends in, OP is stuck defending herself for enforcing a rule she did not make.</p>

OP might be right, but Sarah is acting like the rental rule was a personal attack.
