Friendship Test: AITA for Not Changing My Plans Last Minute for a Friend in Need?

AITA for not canceling my trip last minute for a friend in need? Opinions split as I stand by my plans and boundaries.

Sarah didn’t just call her friend, she called her friend crying, begging for a last-minute rescue, and suddenly a planned weekend trip turned into a full-blown friendship trial.

OP, a 24-year-old woman who has known Sarah for six years, had already booked transportation and accommodation for a trip with her cousin, months in advance. Then Sarah went through a breakup and demanded OP cancel everything for that weekend, claiming only a “real friend” would drop their plans. When OP said she couldn’t just eat the costs and offered daily check-ins instead, Sarah accused her of choosing fun over friendship and stopped replying. Now mutual friends are calling OP selfish.

Here’s the part that makes it messy: Sarah didn’t ask for help, she asked for a full cancellation.

Original Post

I (24F) have been friends with Sarah (25F) for about 6 years. We’ve always been close, but lately she’s been relying on me a lot emotionally and financially.

A few weeks ago, I told Sarah that I had planned a small weekend trip with my cousin. I’d already paid for transportation and accommodation.

I don’t travel often, so I was really looking forward to it. Last week, Sarah called me crying and said she was going through a rough breakup and really needed me that weekend.

She asked me to cancel my trip so I could stay with her. I felt bad for her, so I tried to comfort her on the phone and suggested we spend time together when I got back.

She got upset and said that a real friend would cancel everything for her. I explained that I’d already spent money and had been planning this for months.

I also offered to help her find someone else to stay with and promised to check in every day. She accused me of choosing fun over friendship and stopped replying to my messages.

Now some of our mutual friends are saying I was selfish for not being there when she needed me. I feel guilty, but I also don’t think it’s fair to expect me to drop everything last minute.

AITA?

OP’s already-paid weekend with her cousin was supposed to be a rare break, but Sarah’s breakup call derailed it immediately.

When OP explained the trip was booked months ago, Sarah flipped from “I need you” to “you’re not a real friend.”

OP tried to soften things by offering daily check-ins and help finding someone else to stay with, but Sarah still vanished into silence.

Now the mutual friends are weighing in, and OP is stuck wondering if she really chose “fun” over Sarah’s crisis.

OP might have been there to comfort her, but she still isn’t obligated to torch her plans for a breakup.
