Frozen 3 First Look Sets Up Anna and Kristoff’s Marriage, a Big First for Disney Princess Movies
D23 footage suggests Anna will be married for most of Frozen 3, a first for a Disney princess-led theatrical film before its 2027 release.
Frozen 3 gave Disney fans a lot to pick over at D23, but one detail stands above the rest. The sequel appears ready to put Anna and Kristoff’s married life at the center of a theatrical Disney princess story, something the studio has not done since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs began the cycle in 1937.
What changed for Frozen 3
The key shift is simple: Anna does not seem to be heading toward a wedding at the very end of the movie. The first look shown at D23 points to her and Kristoff getting married at the start, which would leave Anna as a wife for most of the film.
That matters because Disney has traditionally handled its princess romances differently on the big screen. Princesses usually stay unmarried, marry only at the end, or reach married life in direct-to-video follow-ups instead of theatrical releases. Frozen 3, which opens November 24, 2027, would change that pattern for Disney’s princess line in theaters.
The distinction is why this landed as such a notable development for longtime Disney watchers. The studio has released sequels including Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and Mulan II with married or eventually married princesses, but those were not theatrical films built around a princess who was already married from the outset.
What the D23 footage showed
The unreleased trailer opens in Arendelle during Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, picking up after Kristoff’s proposal in Frozen 2. Elsa appears in a new pink gown and finds a butterfly that has frozen over. Olaf, Anna, and Kristoff then arrive on Sven.
Anna and Kristoff are shown in wedding clothes, and Elsa appears to have called everyone over to inspect a mysterious stone. It opens into a portal that resembles the aurora borealis. Anna wonders if their wedding is being interrupted, and the group decides to go through. Before that, Anna asks for help with her dress, and Sven ends up pinning the hem to her back. Olaf then jokes at Kristoff’s expense in a way that suggests the wedding has already happened.
The footage continues in a new icy setting, where the group meets another woman who seems to have powers like Elsa’s. Her face is not shown, but she addresses Anna and Elsa as the famous sisters of Arendelle.
Frozen 3 is set to arrive nearly 10 years after the previous film. It is also expected to help set up Frozen 4, which has been in development for some time and is predicted to reach theaters in 2028. One smaller tease from the D23 material also points to Olaf’s possible romance with Samantha, including a moment where he catches Anna’s bouquet.
