As usual, I have a very personal experience with an awkward situation. Recently, I taught my grandmother how to use WhatsApp.

A couple of months ago, she received a group message on WhatsApp informing her that my aunt had fallen down the stairs and injured her pelvis. Let me lay it out for you.

Cousin: Sorry I couldn't call you back, Nana. Aunt fell down the stairs this morning and has injured her pelvis. I’ve been to the doctor, and the X-ray shows no fracture.

Nana should have called my cousin to sort out her wishes, but instead, this is what she wrote back:

Nana: "I heard; falling down is painful. Hope she feels better soon, LOL."

I was mortified, and you can imagine why. Nana thought LOL meant "Lots of Love."

We still talk about Nana's LOL, but thankfully everyone in the family knows she didn't mean to laugh out loud. This is just one of many awkward conversations.
