Tension Arises As Man Threatens To Evict Girlfriend's Father Who Is Hazardous Threat To Other Tenants

"I am not wasting time or any more funds on him."

A new management team doesn’t usually kick off with drama, but this one started with OP doing a door-to-door sweep to introduce himself to the tenants. He wasn’t there for small talk, he was there to explain the rules that come with new ownership.

And then the mess got personal. OP claims he’s giving a hard timeline, 30 days before fire and building code inspections, while his girlfriend and her father are living in a situation OP describes as hazardous: stench from animal waste, hoarding, and the kind of buildup that can spread through shared systems like HVAC. OP says he’s already arranged dumpsters and is trying to keep the building safe, but his girlfriend wants him to back off.

Now OP is stuck in the middle of girlfriend drama and neighbor safety, and Reddit is already predicting the relationship could blow up.

OP’s door-to-door “here are the new rules” visit quickly turns into an argument when the girlfriend’s father becomes the problem everyone has to deal with, not just the man OP wants out of the unit.

Conflicts in relationships often arise from differing values and expectations.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the a-hole:

(1) to be judged is giving a possible eviction notice, (2) being harsh and not giving in to what my girlfriend wants

The tension spikes when OP lays out the clock, inspections due in 30 days, and points to dumpsters being provided so the hoarding and waste can be cleared before the building gets flagged.

Research indicates that discussing boundaries openly can prevent misunderstandings and resentment.

This is similar to refusing to let my evicted friend stay over, even though he claimed it was desperate.

The OP added more details in the comments section

I have 30 days before there is a fire code inspection and building code inspection due to new ownership. If you were a tenant dealing with the stench from your neighbor, how would you feel? If cockroaches went through the HVAC system into your apartment, how would you feel? Or the black mold? Or the stench of animal feces and urine?I am providing up to 2 dumpsters next week and last week (4 weeks from now) for the disposal of items to abide by fire and building code. I don't think you understand how much damage hoarding can do to a building.

It's a matter of business and safety

Redditors jump in with the kind of details that make it clear this isn’t just “gross,” it’s the stench and animal urine OP says could seep into flooring and spread through the building’s systems.

In the fraught dynamics of shared living situations, establishing boundaries becomes vital for maintaining emotional health.

And with OP refusing to give “special treatment” while his girlfriend pushes for a softer approach, the whole situation becomes less about property management and more about who controls the fallout.

Furthermore, seeking compromise can help mitigate conflict. Couples can work together to find solutions that consider both partners' needs and concerns, fostering a sense of collaboration.

Some Redditors mentioned that cat urine is horrific, and if it seeps into the flooring, it can cause damage to the carpet or hardwood, underlayment, and quite possibly even the plywood in the subfloor.

Apparently, the OP might be causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage, so he was only trying to avoid that. He was declared not the AH, and that's a wrap!

Addressing Family Dynamics

Family dynamics can complicate relationships, particularly when in-laws are involved. Couples should strive to understand each other's family backgrounds and how they influence current interactions.

The recent incident involving a man threatening to evict his girlfriend's father shines a light on the critical need for effective communication and boundary-setting in relationships. The tensions between personal and familial obligations can lead to explosive situations when not managed properly.

When partners struggle to understand each other's emotional needs, conflicts can escalate, as seen in this case. The stakes are high when one party feels endangered by another's behavior, creating a precarious living situation for all tenants involved. Without these strategies in place, relationships can fracture, leaving individuals to face difficult circumstances alone.

He came in to manage the building, and he might lose the relationship while he’s trying to keep everyone else safe.
