Ten Lovely Paintings of Studio Ghibli Characters You're Sure to Fall in Love With
"Recreating the feelings of serenity, cheerfulness, and love for life that Studio Ghibli movies evoke."
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio based in Tokyo's Koganei neighborhood. It is best known for its animated feature films, but it has also produced a number of short films, television commercials, and two TV films.
Since 1986, Studio Ghibli has been subtly revolutionizing the world of animation by combining an endearing and empathetic worldview with rousing adventure. That year marked the debut of their feature film, Castle in the Sky, which heralded Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata as a superstar team.
Nausicaä was created prior to Ghibli's establishment but has been culturally adopted as part of its filmography. My Neighbor Totoro has been Studio Ghibli's global champion, and Kiki's Delivery Service rounded out the rest of the '80s.
It wasn't long before producer Takahata took on the role of director, crafting the somber Grave of the Fireflies, which was released in Japan as a double feature with Totoro. Much of this did not occur until the 1990s.
An artist and fan of Ghibli movies managed to combine his love for Ghibli films with his love for nature in these watercolor paintings, attempting to recreate the feelings of serenity, cheerfulness, and love for life that Studio Ghibli movies provide.

As the 1990s began, the two Ghibli founders competed with Porco Rosso and Only Yesterday. Takahata created the latter, establishing himself as a more dramatically grounded artist than Miyazaki's literal flights of fancy.
Miyazaki's fanciful stories, from the ecological war epic Princess Mononoke to the wizardry and witchcraft of Howl's Moving Castle to the Oscar-winning masterpiece Spirited Away, have proven popular internationally. Takahata's final film before his death in 2018 was The Tale of Princess Kaguya.
