Handling Office Coffee Runs: Navigating Personal Conflict with a Co-worker

WIBTA for declining a co-worker's coffee run request due to a personal conflict, sparking office tension?

A 28-year-old woman refused to split a coffee run with a coworker named Sarah, and it turned into a full office blowup faster than anyone could say “extra oat milk, please.”

In her busy workplace, coffee runs are supposed to be a bonding ritual, but Sarah makes it feel like a hostage negotiation. After Sarah dismissed her ideas in front of their boss at a team meeting, their relationship has been icy ever since. Last week, Sarah asked everyone to chip in for a run and demanded her usual complicated, fancy order, expecting equal payment like the earlier drama never happened.

When Sarah called her out in front of everyone, the question stopped being about coffee and started being about who’s actually willing to move past it.

So, I (28F) work in a busy office where coffee runs are a common way to bond and show appreciation. There's this co-worker, let's call her Sarah, who I've had a rocky relationship with after a disagreement in a team meeting last month.

Sarah is known for her demanding nature and often asks for extravagant coffee orders, expecting everyone to pitch in equally for her 'fancy taste'. For background, Sarah and I clashed over a project where she dismissed my ideas in front of our boss, leading to a tense atmosphere between us ever since.

Last week, Sarah asked our team to chip in for a coffee run, and when she requested her usual complicated order, I felt a pang of irritation remembering our previous conflict. Despite trying to keep the peace, I couldn't shake off the resentment.

When Sarah turned to me for my contribution, I made up an excuse about overspending and declined to participate, citing financial constraints as a reason. Now, Sarah was visibly upset and called me out in front of our colleagues, questioning my commitment to teamwork and accusing me of singling her out.

Her tone was confrontational, and I could feel the tension rising in the room. I stood my ground, but now I'm wondering, would I be the a*****e if I continued to refuse Sarah's requests for coffee runs, knowing it stems from our personal conflict?

Should I prioritize professionalism over personal grievances? So, WIBTA in this situation?

Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks for hearing me out.

Sarah’s pushy coffee demands feel a lot like the AITA coworker who refused to switch shifts to prioritize personal time.

That tension goes way back to the moment Sarah shut down OP’s ideas in front of the boss, and it’s still sitting in the air every time the team “bonds” over caffeine.

When Sarah pulled out her extravagant usual order and asked for OP’s contribution, OP tried to play it off, but the resentment from that meeting came rushing back.

The awkward part is OP declined with a financial excuse, and then Sarah flipped the script by confronting her publicly, right there among coworkers.

Now OP is stuck wondering if refusing coffee runs is petty revenge, or if Sarah is the one escalating things every time she makes a “simple” coffee request a team-wide event.

We'd love to hear your take on this situation. Share your thoughts below.

Nobody wants to be the villain in the break room, but Sarah made sure OP didn’t get to just quietly walk away.
