Is it Inappropriate to Dress as a Plague Doctor for Halloween?
Debating whether dressing as a plague doctor for Halloween is inappropriate given recent events—what's your take on this controversial costume choice?
Some Halloween costumes are just costumes, and some land like a loaded question. In this Reddit story, a 28-year-old woman is trying to enjoy her boyfriend’s first “real” Halloween in years, but the theme he chose is a plague doctor getup, complete with the eerie mask.
Here’s the complication: plenty of people in their lives died from COVID, including people close to them. Her boyfriend never really got to do Halloween growing up, and he’s been wanting this plague doctor look “for as long as she can remember,” mostly because he just never had the money. Now the couple is planning to wear it at a private party with his friends and while giving candy to neighbors they know well.
And the big question is, will the costume feel like disrespect, or can it be Halloween fun?
Original Post
My boyfriend and I always dress up together for Halloween. Every year, we switch the person who chooses the theme of the costumes.
This year is my boyfriend's turn, and he never really had Halloween when he was younger; he never had super spooky Halloween decorations in his house, nor for Christmas, for that matter. I feel like he kind of missed out.
He chose plague doctors this year, and even though I believe it is a little inappropriate since many people died due to COVID, including people close to us, we thought it was okay since the Halloween store was selling it. He has wanted to dress up as that for as long as I can remember.
He just never had the money to buy the costume. I've talked about my boyfriend's choice with some people, and they all told me it was super inappropriate and that I should be ashamed.
I see the shame, but we will only be dressed up during a private party with my boyfriend's friends and while giving out some candy to the neighbors we know very well. I don't want to upset anyone at all, but I was wondering how much of an a*****e I'd be to support my boyfriend in his first real Halloween with the costume he chose.
Thank you all for reading!

Her boyfriend’s plague doctor plan sounds harmless until she remembers how many COVID losses they carry around, including people close to them.

Research shows that people often dress in costumes that reflect their values or beliefs, which can lead to debates about appropriateness. The choice of a plague doctor costume can be interpreted as a reflection of one's view on historical events, yet it might evoke strong emotional reactions due to the ongoing pandemic's impact.
Thus, understanding the balance between self-expression and social sensitivity is crucial.

When she brings it up to other people, they immediately call it super inappropriate and tell her she should be ashamed, which makes the whole vibe weird.
To foster social sensitivity when choosing costumes, consider adopting a practice of open dialogue.

Dressing in provocative or historical costumes often reflects deeper psychological needs, including the desire for social validation.
This couples versus singles fight over sleeping space, when one friend refused the bunk bed and the couples demanded double rooms, feels painfully familiar.

Even though they’re only wearing it at a private party and with neighbors they actually know, the judgment still follows her like the costume mask.
Cultural Sensitivity in Costuming
Cultural sensitivity is paramount when selecting costumes that reference historical traumas. Dressing as a plague doctor can serve as a reminder of the suffering endured during past pandemics, and many may find such representations distressing.
Being aware of these cultural nuances can guide individuals toward more thoughtful costume choices that respect the diverse emotional landscapes of those around them.

In light of the discussions surrounding the appropriateness of certain costumes, understanding how humor interacts with societal trauma is vital. Theories on performance and identity suggest that costumes serve as a form of social commentary, reflecting both personal and collective narratives. As costumes can evoke powerful emotional responses, it's essential to consider the context surrounding a choice like a plague doctor outfit. Engaging with these layers of meaning can help individuals make informed decisions that respect the sentiments of others while still allowing for personal expression.

This Halloween, the choice of a plague doctor costume raises significant questions about cultural sensitivity and the broader implications of humor in a time marked by recent global health crises. The Reddit user's dilemma highlights the tension between individual expression and societal norms, particularly when dressing as a figure associated with suffering and mortality. This year, as we navigate the complexities of Halloween, it is essential to consider the feelings of those who have been directly impacted by the pandemic while still allowing for personal creativity. Striving for a Halloween that embraces inclusivity and respects diverse viewpoints not only enriches the experience but also fosters a deeper understanding of the narratives we choose to embody.

She just wanted him to finally have Halloween, and now she’s worried the costume will turn it into a fight.
