Is It Rude to Play Video Games at a Restaurant? My Stepson Stormed Out After I Asked Him to Stop
AITA for asking stepson to stop playing video games at a restaurant? Husband is mad, but Reddit supports OP's stance on adult stepson's behavior.
Are you the one who's wrong for requesting your adult stepson to stop playing a video game on his phone at a restaurant during a birthday lunch? Picture this: a birthday celebration for your daughter, a lovely lunch gathering with family.
But then, the mood is disrupted by a 27-year-old stepson engrossed in a car racing game, gesticulating wildly at the table. You politely ask him to stop, emphasizing the inappropriateness of his actions during a family meal.
The situation escalates as he sulks, lies about being on his phone when confronted by his father, and storms out of the restaurant. Your husband is upset with you for reprimanding his son, while you stand firm in your belief that your request was justified.
The Reddit community weighs in, with opinions split on whether your actions were warranted or if the stepson's behavior was indeed disrespectful and immature. From labeling the stepson as rude and immature to questioning the husband's reaction, the comments reflect a spectrum of perspectives on family dynamics and etiquette.
Some argue that age is not an excuse for poor behavior, while others defend the stepson's right to do as he pleases. The debate rages on, highlighting the complexities of navigating relationships and setting boundaries within blended families.

Recently I hosted a birthday lunch for my daughter (16) and invited my bonus children 23yo (F) and 27yo (M) along with my husband. Towards the end of the meal and before dessert, my husband left the table to go to the restroom.
This incident happened while my husband was away from the table. The 27yo (M) starting playing some sort of car racing video game on his phone using both hands and gesturing wildly at the table while we were trying to order the birthday dessert.
I asked him if he was playing a video game, and when he said yes, I told him that it was inappropriate to do that during a meal in a restaurant (especially a small birthday celebration). He put the phone down and sat stone faced at the table staring away from the rest of us until my husband returned.
When my husband asked him if he was on his phone (since he was still holding it under the table) He said "No, that would be inappropriate" . Then he announced he was leaving and stormed out of the restaurant without saying goodbye to anyone.
Now my husband is angry at me for making his son "feel" bad. I believe I was correct in asking him to change his behavior.
27yo(M) did send a text the next day apologizing and I accepted his apology and also told him I was sorry if I hurt his feelings. I explained that we see them so infrequency, we want to spend time with them, and not on screens.
My husband is still mad and I don't think I was wrong? Also to clarify, neither of the bonus kids have a job or go to school, they spend their days at their mom's house playing video games and phone scrolling so they may not know any better.
Understanding Social Norms
Social norms play a crucial role in dictating acceptable behaviors in various settings, including restaurants. According to Dr. Esther Perel, a renowned couples therapist and author, "Social norms are the invisible rules that guide our interactions and help maintain harmony in shared spaces." These unwritten rules serve as a guide for interactions, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding among diners. When someone violates these expectations, such as by playing video games during a meal, it can create discomfort for others at the table. Dr. Perel further explains, "Disruptions in social settings can lead to feelings of isolation or frustration among fellow diners." Understanding these social cues is critical for maintaining harmony in shared spaces, ensuring that everyone feels included and respected during their dining experience.

Disruptions in social settings can lead to negative feelings among participants, creating an atmosphere of tension and unease. According to Dr. Dan Gilbert, a happiness researcher, "Social interactions are essential to our well-being, and interruptions can foster feelings of exclusion and resentment." These emotional repercussions can manifest in various ways, impacting not only the immediate interactions but also the long-term relationships between individuals. This emotional fallout can significantly affect family dynamics, particularly in cases like the one described, where a simple request escalates into a more significant conflict. When misunderstandings arise, they can create rifts that may take considerable time and effort to mend. Understanding the underlying emotional responses to disruptions is crucial for fostering healthier communication and resolving conflicts in social and familial settings, as emphasized by Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a clinical psychologist who states, "Healthy communication is vital for maintaining strong relationships."

Teaching social cues and appropriate behaviors in public settings is essential for fostering positive interactions among individuals of all ages. As noted by Dr. Michael Thompson, a child psychologist, "Explicit instruction on social norms can significantly enhance the ability of both children and adults to navigate social situations effectively." This kind of education helps to demystify the often-unspoken rules that govern social interactions.
Engaging in role-playing scenarios offers a practical approach to helping individuals recognize and practice appropriate behaviors in various contexts. According to Dr. Dan Siegel, a renowned child psychiatrist, "Role-playing provides a safe space for individuals to learn and make mistakes, which is crucial for building confidence and developing necessary social skills." By simulating real-life situations, participants can engage more effectively with others in their communities.

The Psychology of Distraction
Distractions like video games can significantly detract from interpersonal interactions, often leading to a decrease in meaningful communication among individuals. According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, an emotional intelligence expert, "Distractions can prevent us from fully engaging with others, which is essential for building strong relationships." This can create a barrier to genuine understanding and connection, which are essential for healthy relationships.
This phenomenon is particularly relevant in family settings, where connection and engagement are highly valued. As Dr. Daniel Kahneman, a behavioral economist, notes, "Shared experiences are crucial for fostering a supportive family environment, as they help to strengthen bonds and improve communication." By encouraging activities that promote togetherness, families can enhance their overall communication, leading to a more harmonious home life. It is crucial to recognize the impact of distractions and actively seek to minimize them in favor of fostering deeper connections.

Balancing Personal Interests with Social Expectations
Individuals often grapple with the tension between personal interests and social expectations, a dynamic that plays a crucial role in shaping our social interactions. According to Dr. Susan David, a leading psychologist and author, "The ability to navigate the complexities of our emotions and social expectations is essential for maintaining healthy relationships." This conflict can lead to significant stress in social situations, impacting both mental health and interpersonal relationships.
When individuals feel pressured to conform to societal norms while trying to pursue their own passions, it creates an internal struggle that can be overwhelming. Dr. Pat Love, a relationship therapist, emphasizes that "open communication is vital in balancing personal interests with social expectations." Developing skills to balance these competing interests is key to enhancing social cohesion and personal fulfillment, enabling individuals to enjoy their hobbies without alienating those around them. By fostering understanding, we can create environments where personal interests are celebrated alongside social expectations, ultimately leading to healthier relationships and increased overall well-being.

To improve future interactions, it's vital to incorporate empathy and consideration for others. Studies indicate that fostering these crucial skills contributes significantly to the development of positive relationships and enhances overall communication. Implementing these practices not only benefits individual connections but also enriches group dynamics, leading to a more harmonious environment.
An immediate step is to initiate conversations about shared expectations during gatherings, ensuring everyone feels heard and valued. In the short term, consider setting clear guidelines for device use at family meals to encourage genuine engagement with one another. In the long term, work on developing a comprehensive family code of conduct that prioritizes connection, understanding, and mutual respect. This structured approach can help bridge gaps between personal interests and social norms over time, creating a culture of mindfulness that benefits everyone involved.
