Is it selfish to not want my moms mail delivered to my house?
AITA for refusing to let my mom have her mail sent to my place due to her excessive online shopping habits, leading to a confrontation over boundaries and responsibilities?
A 28-year-old woman is stuck playing “human delivery desk” for her mom, and it’s turning into a full-on family fight over packages. She works from home most days, but she has to go into the office on Fridays, and that’s when her mom’s mail plan really starts falling apart.
Instead of getting deliveries at her own place, her mom has decided to route everything to OP’s apartment. The catch is, her mom is also the internet’s top buyer, which means constant Amazon boxes, OP needing to sign for them, and neighbors getting dragged into the pickup shuffle when OP is away. And when OP says no, her mom complains, then turns around and hits her with the classic mom name-calling.
Now OP is wondering if she’s selfish for wanting her own home to stay, well, hers.
Original Post
For some context, I work from home, except on Fridays when I have to go to the office. Because of that, my mom, who says "I don't do anything all day", has decided to have her mail delivered to my apartment instead of hers.
It would be fine if she wasn't the internet's number one buyer. I don't have time to sign for Amazon packages all day, nor do I want to keep bothering my neighbors to pick them up for me.
Not only that, but she also complains a lot when I don't pick something up, which happens quite often. So I told her, "get them delivered to your own place if it bothers you so much", and she got upset and started the classic mom name-calling.
Am I being selfish? edit: minor grammar mistake

Every time OP has to sign for yet another Amazon package, it turns into an all-day chore she did not agree to.
This is similar to a mom who threw away her own medication after deciding she “didn’t need” it.

Establishing these conversations as a norm can minimize future misunderstandings.

When OP stops picking things up and tells her mom to reroute deliveries to her own place, the response is not gratitude, it’s insults.

The argument spirals because OP is trying to set a boundary while her mom keeps treating OP’s apartment like the default storage unit.
Future Considerations
Looking ahead, establishing a family protocol for managing shared spaces can prevent similar conflicts.

This situation highlights a common struggle with boundaries in family relationships.
In this scenario, the Reddit user faces a common yet challenging issue within family dynamics: the struggle to maintain personal boundaries while navigating the needs of a parent. The decision to have mail delivered to one's home can seem innocuous, but it often carries deeper implications regarding privacy and autonomy. Open dialogues about personal space and responsibilities can help avert feelings of resentment that may arise from unspoken expectations. Implementing proactive strategies, such as regular discussions about boundaries and expectations, can foster a more respectful and cooperative environment. This approach not only addresses the immediate concern but also lays the groundwork for a more harmonious living arrangement, allowing both parties to feel valued and understood.
If her mom wants nonstop deliveries, she can handle the signing, not OP.
