Man Accused Of "Keeping Scores" And Ruining Family Dinner After He Pointed Out How He's Been Treated Unfairly All His Life
"I just felt like it was self-evident"
A family dinner turned into a full-on accusation spree, and it started with one person saying the quiet part out loud. In this Reddit post, the OP is dealing with the fallout after they left abruptly mid-meal, and they were also accused of “keeping score” about how their parents treat them compared to their siblings.
The complicated part is that the siblings had stories that sounded like wins, like how almost all of their weddings were treated like big deals, and how when one brother went back to school, the parents paid for everything. Meanwhile, OP says the differences were never subtle to them, even if they weren’t trying to be calculating.
By the time the dinner was over, the whole thing stopped being about food and started being about who gets attention, money, and respect, and now OP is wondering if they crossed a line.
The OP writes

That’s when the OP’s abrupt exit in the middle of dinner made everyone focus on the “rude” part first.
OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the AH:
I did two things that I am being accused of being an asshole for. First, I left very abruptly in the middle of a family dinner, and although I didn't say anything that was seen as extremely rude, it was still abrupt. Second, I have "kept score" regarding the amount of attention and money given to my siblings by my parents and compared it to what I have received. I don't feel like it's been conscious, but it's not exactly been subtle differences in my opinion.

Then the parents got pulled into it, especially after the OP brought up how their brother’s school got fully covered.
The recent incident involving a man accused of ruining a family dinner by pointing out how he has been treated unfairly throughout his life highlights the deep-seated emotions tied to perceived inequities. The family dynamic often suffers when one member feels their sacrifices and contributions go unnoticed, leading to feelings of resentment. This situation serves as a reminder that unaddressed grievances can escalate tensions, turning what should be a joyful gathering into a battleground of unresolved issues. Addressing these sentiments head-on is essential for families striving to maintain harmony, as ignoring them only perpetuates conflict and dissatisfaction. This incident underscores the need for open communication and recognition of each member's feelings to foster healthier interactions within families.
This is the same kind of fight as the AITA where someone insisted friends pay exact split amounts.

And after the comments rolled in, it basically turned into a debate over whether OP was “keeping score” or just finally saying what everyone already noticed.
Some Redditors told the OP that he can only be free once he releases himself from the power that DNA holds over him. Just because they stayed together during childhood doesn't mean he has to share a roof with them, as he may end up being more hurt if he feels that DNA is more important than connection.
The OP was declared not the AH, and that's where we draw the curtains!
As highlighted in the article, the scenario of a family dinner marred by accusations of unfair treatment underscores the complexities of familial relationships. The need for empathy and understanding is paramount in addressing such grievances. Open communication emerges as a vital tool in untangling the perceived injustices that can fester within family dynamics. By fostering an environment of mutual respect and validation, families have the opportunity to reinforce their connections and cultivate a more supportive atmosphere, ultimately transforming potential conflicts into constructive dialogues.
