Volkswagen Camper Recreated In Full Size Using 400,000 LEGO Pieces
Certified LEGO model makers built a full-size Volkswagen Camper using 400,000 LEGO pieces.
If you are a fan of Volkswagen vehicles, then you have to see this one entirely made of LEGO bricks. You’re going to love it for sure.
The Volkswagen Type 2 Camper is well-known as the most popular camper model in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. After seeing this cultural symbol, you simply cannot escape the sense of nostalgia that accompanies it.
For those who remember and appreciate its purpose, LEGO masters have created a full-size Volkswagen Type 2 camper from LEGO. Get ready to hit the road of nostalgia and revive the past.
There are only 12 officially certified LEGO model makers in the world, and one of them, Rene Hoffmeister, along with his colleague Pascal Lenhard, assembled this magnificent creation. With the help of 3D modeling, this duo managed to create the construction plan and even calculated the exact number of LEGO bricks needed.
The camper is built around a steel frame weighing 1,542 pounds (approximately 700 kg). Due to its lasting stability, this fascinating life-size model can withstand the weight of two adults, allowing for exploration of the retro interior.
It took 400,000 pieces of LEGO and almost six weeks to complete the masterpiece. However, the entire plan almost went awry when they discovered they were 20,000 transparent pieces short for constructing the vehicle’s windows.
Nevertheless, this delay didn’t demoralize them; they worked day and night, and in the end, that extra effort paid off. They managed to finish this project before the deadline and displayed the full-size VW T2 Camper LEGO replica at the F.RE.E Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany.

LEGO masters even managed to incorporate the iconic pop-up roof and a fully functional, well-known sliding door.

Due to the delay of 20,000 transparent pieces, they had to work overtime. As Hoffmeister stated:
“Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week. However, as they don’t exist, the only option was night shifts.”

As a homage to the VW campervan, the LEGO replica was displayed at the F.RE.E Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany, and the crowd was more than amazed by it.
After creating the full-size model of the VW Camper out of LEGO bricks, LEGO released a desk-sized version. Now everyone can construct this iconic model, and by creating a smaller version, LEGO also satisfied passionate collectors.
