Can Disney+ change Live-Action Moana's story? Disney sets Oct. 21 release date

Disney will add live-action Moana to Disney+ on Oct. 21, after its July theatrical debut and Sept. 8 digital release.

The live-action Moana now has its Disney+ date, and Disney is about to find out whether streaming can do what theaters did not. The remake will join the service on Oct. 21, giving subscribers a set day to watch a film that had a much softer box office run than the animated movies tied to the franchise.

What changes on Oct. 21

Disney has scheduled the live-action Moana for Disney+ on Oct. 21, 2026. For Disney+ subscribers, that is the point when the movie moves from its paid release windows into the regular streaming library.

The film first opened in theaters in July, then reached digital stores for purchase and rental on Sept. 8. Its Disney+ arrival comes 104 days after the theatrical debut, or a little over three months later. For fans who skipped the cinema run or did not want to rent or buy it first, Oct. 21 is the date that changes access.

Why the streaming move is getting extra attention

The Disney+ debut follows a theatrical performance that fell short of Disney's usual remake standards. The movie opened to $43 million domestically, then went on to earn just over $162 million in North America and $323.6 million worldwide. One account listed it as the 16th highest-grossing film of 2026. With a reported $250 million budget, that total fed a broader conversation about the economics of Disney's live-action remakes, and Disney itself has said the film underperformed.

Disney president Dana Walden said part of that underperformance may have come from releasing the remake so soon after Moana 2. The animated sequel did much better at the box office, making more than $1 billion worldwide and nearly tripling the live-action film's total. The original animated Moana was also a much bigger theatrical success, earning $687.2 million worldwide.

Reviews were also a hurdle. Critics argued that the remake stayed too close to the 2016 animated film and did not carve out enough of its own identity.

Even so, Disney has made clear that it still sees value in Moana on streaming. The company expects the live-action film to be a strong title on Disney+, citing the original movie as one of the most streamed films of all time. That confidence sits inside a bigger franchise push that now spans three films, a themed area at EPCOT, and a large global merchandise business.
