Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man just shared a cover, and it points to Marvel and Star Wars' next big comic event

Marvel and Lucasfilm unveiled new Hope Assembles art, including a Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man cover, ahead of its January 2027 debut.

One of the strangest and most eye-catching pairings at New York Comic Con was Luke Skywalker standing alongside Spider-Man. The image was part of a larger reveal for Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles, a new limited comic series that will bring the two franchises together in early 2027.

Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing used the Marvel Comics: House of Ideas panel at New York Comic Con to show off fresh art and covers for Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue series set to begin in January 2027. The project is written by Kevin Smith, with art by David Marquez, and is billed as the first time major heroes and villains from Marvel and Star Wars will meet in this kind of crossover.

Smith appeared as a surprise guest during the panel. Beyond filmmaking, he is also known for comic work at both Marvel and DC, alongside directing films including Clerks and Mallrats.

The standout reveal was a cover painted by Alex Ross that puts Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man together. For Disney fans who follow both galaxy far, far away stories and Marvel superheroes, that single image may be the clearest sign yet of what this series is aiming to do: merge two long-running worlds in a way that leans into their most recognizable characters.

What changes for readers, and when

The new series starts with a spell that changes reality and lets Marvel heroes see the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. That setup is meant to launch the broader crossover between the two universes.

Marvel also outlined an extensive cover program for the run. The main covers will form connecting artwork by Marquez. Other lines include Alliance Variants, which pair Marvel and Star Wars characters in unusual team-ups, and Battle Variants, which pit characters from each universe against one another. A New Hope Variants will recreate moments from the 1977 film with Marvel characters in place. Crossover Variants will swap signature weapons, costumes and symbols between the franchises. Marvel Homage Variants will remake classic Marvel covers using characters from both brands. Retro Variants will draw inspiration from Marvel's original Star Wars comics.

The timing is part of the point. Hope Assembles is tied to 50 years since Marvel first published Star Wars comics in 1977, the same year the original movie reached theaters.

For readers, the practical change is simple. Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles #1 arrives in comic shops in January 2027, and preorders are already open through local comic book stores.
