Deep Purple postponed Leipzig and Hamburg shows after a medical emergency involving singer Ian Gillan led to his hospitalization.

What the band announced

In a statement posted Saturday morning on the group’s official Facebook page, Deep Purple said they would not be able to perform that night at the QI Arena in Leipzig or the following evening at the Sporthalle in Hamburg.

The band said the cancellations were caused by a medical emergency involving Gillan, without giving further details. The statement added that his condition had resulted in hospitalization.

Deep Purple also acknowledged that the news came with little warning and said they understood fans would be disappointed. The group said its team is working to find new dates for both concerts, and that tickets already bought will still be accepted when the shows are rescheduled.

What happens next on the tour

Gillan, who is 81, has been on the road with the band in support of Deep Purple’s latest studio album, Splat!, which was released in July.

After the postponed Leipzig and Hamburg appearances, the next date on the current itinerary is set for Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Dortmund, Germany. The schedule then lists more stops in Berlin, Frankfurt and Nuremberg, followed by shows in Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Nantes and Lyon.

The run of announced dates also includes concerts in the UK, with stops in Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and two London shows, one at the Eventim Apollo and another at the Royal Albert Hall. Later dates on the published schedule include Sao Paulo, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

For now, the band has not shared any more information about Gillan’s medical issue beyond confirming the hospitalization and the two postponements.

Why a tour stop can be paused

Live touring is a tightly timed operation. A single concert depends on the performers, crew, trucks, instruments, lighting, sound, local staff and venue all being ready at the same moment. If one part fails, a stop can be postponed, paused or canceled.

Health issues are a common cause, especially on long runs with frequent travel and little recovery time. Voice strain, respiratory illness, exhaustion and minor injuries can make a show difficult or unsafe. Technical problems, transport delays, severe weather and venue issues can also force a change, even when the artist still intends to continue the tour.

How rescheduling usually works

When a date changes, promoters and venues normally try to move the show rather than scrap it. Existing tickets are often kept valid for the new date, but fans should always check the official ticket seller or venue notice rather than relying on social media posts from other users.

Refund options vary by seller, event terms and whether the stop is postponed or fully canceled. If travel or hotels were booked separately, those arrangements may follow different rules. It is usually worth checking cancellation terms before buying extras around any concert trip.

What fans can do

Keep the original ticket confirmation, watch for messages from the ticket seller, and check the venue website first for updates. If you bought through a resale platform, confirm whether the seller or the platform handles changes.

For older acts with demanding set lists and travel schedules, flexibility helps. Waiting for official confirmation before changing plans can save time and money.
