Why Mickey Mouse Turned Up in Pittsboro, and What It Says About Disney’s Next North Carolina Community
Mickey Mouse made a surprise stop in Pittsboro as Storyliving by Disney backed a local club and looked ahead to Asteria.
The attention-grabbing part came first. Mickey Mouse appeared in Pittsboro, North Carolina, for a celebration tied to a local Boys & Girls Club, turning a community anniversary into a Disney moment. The visit was not a random character stop. It was part of a larger introduction of Storyliving by Disney to the area where Disney is developing Asteria, its second branded residential community.
A Disney surprise in Pittsboro
Mickey Mouse does not usually factor into a milestone event for a community club in North Carolina, which is why his appearance on October 17 stood out. Storyliving by Disney brought him to Pittsboro to help mark two occasions at once, the fifth anniversary of the Pittsboro Club and the 30th anniversary of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Carolina.
Storyliving by Disney shared the visit as a behind-the-scenes surprise for the organization, and the clip below captures that moment in passing. The appearance also carried a more concrete show of support. Storyliving by Disney donated $30,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Carolina as part of the anniversary celebration.
The company linked that gift to the work the organization has done for children and families over three decades. Disney said it hopes its involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs will help encourage creative confidence in children and support them as they build a brighter future.
For the club itself, the partnership was presented as a meaningful endorsement. Dr. Fallon Brewington, the CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Carolina, said it was exciting to have Storyliving by Disney supporting the organization and called the company’s presence during the 30th anniversary especially significant.
The choice to send Mickey also gave the event a distinctly Disney shape. Even so, Disney made a point of treating the visit as an extra appearance rather than a disappearance from the parks. Fans at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, and Disney parks elsewhere, Disney suggested, did not need to worry. Mickey could still keep up his usual greetings while making a surprise stop in North Carolina.

More than a visit, an introduction to Asteria
The Pittsboro appearance makes more sense when placed next to what Disney is building nearby. Storyliving by Disney is developing Asteria in Chatham County, North Carolina, making it the second Storyliving by Disney community.
Claire Bilby, senior vice president and general manager of Storyliving by Disney, said being part of a community means supporting the people and organizations that help make that place special. Looking ahead to Asteria in Pittsboro, she said the company wants to build local connections while recognizing and strengthening the work groups such as Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Carolina are already doing.
That framing matters because Asteria is not a theme park expansion or a resort hotel project. It is a 1,500 acre residential community planned for Pittsboro, near Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. When complete, it is expected to include more than 4,000 single family and multi family homes.
The development is also being positioned as a Disney community in a fuller sense, not simply a collection of houses with a familiar brand name attached. Plans call for the rentable Lost Key Cottage, a clubhouse inspired by Peter Pan from 1953, a recreation center, dedicated outdoor spaces, a community garden, enrichment programming, and Disney themed activities for residents. Disney has said the amenities are being shaped with the involvement of Walt Disney Imagineers and Disney artists.
The first residential units are expected to be finished and placed on the market in 2027. The remainder of the development is expected to be completed by fall 2028.

How Disney describes the project’s identity
Even the name Asteria comes with a story. Shawn Montague, a site portfolio executive with Walt Disney Imagineering, has said the community takes its name from the aster flower, which is native to North Carolina. He also tied the name to Greek mythology, saying the goddess Astria shed tears of stardust that fell to Earth and became the first aster flowers.
That blend of regional reference and Disney style is central to how the project has been described from the start. In a December 2023 news release, Bilby said the Asteria announcement built on the strong initial interest Disney saw for its first Storyliving by Disney community in California and would bring Disney branded communities to the East Coast.
She also said Disney’s team had been working with Imagineers to create a vision for the North Carolina project inspired by Walt Disney’s curiosity and by North Carolina’s spirit of discovery.
Asteria follows Cotino in Rancho Mirage, California, which was the first Storyliving by Disney community. Alongside those two, the company’s existing Golden Oak neighborhood at Walt Disney World Resort remains part of the small collection of Disney branded residential communities people can point to right now.
What comes after that is still an open question. Disney has not made clear whether Storyliving plans to add more communities like Asteria, Cotino, and Golden Oak in other parts of the United States or around the world.
For now, that leaves Pittsboro with a distinctive early chapter in Disney’s North Carolina story. Before the first homes go on the market, before the full community is finished, Disney’s most recognizable character has already made an appearance there, not for a ribbon cutting, but for a local club anniversary and a donation meant to signal what kind of neighbor Storyliving by Disney says it wants to be.
