6 Actors and Actresses Who Were Replaced in the Middle of a TV Show
Vivian Banks, Ann Veal, Jake T. Austin...
TV fans get used to seeing the same faces week after week, so a mid-series recast can be jarring. One episode, a character feels familiar, and the next, someone else is suddenly in the role.
That kind of switch has happened in plenty of shows, whether because of behind-the-scenes drama, creative changes, or circumstances no one planned for. Sometimes the replacement is obvious right away, and sometimes viewers barely notice until much later.
These TV roles all changed hands in the middle of the story, and the results were memorable for very different reasons.
1. The Baby-Sitters Club - Dawn
Netflix revealed that Xochitl Gomez would be leaving the show due to an "awesome new job," allowing Kyndra Sanchez to take on the role of Dawn.

It was claimed that Dutch actor Michiel Huisman replaced Ed Skrein due to a prior engagement, but the actor later stated that his departure was due to "politics."

3. The Fosters - Jake T. Austin
Following the season two finale, Jake T. Austin left his role on the show, leading fans to believe his character was killed in a major cliffhanger. Noah Centineo, on the other hand, stepped into the role of Jesus in the season three premiere.
4. Riverdale - Reggie Mantle
Ross Butler played jock Reggie Mantle in Riverdale's first season, but after landing a part on 13 Reasons Why, the actor chose to leave the role. Subsequently, Charles Melton was cast in his place, and he managed to win over even his biggest detractors, who were part of the #NotMyReggie movement.
5. Ann Veal - Arrested Development
The creators decided to replace Alessandra Torresani with Mae Whitman in season two as a gag.
"They were originally going to keep replacing the actress who played Ann, just so you were always on your toes," Whitman revealed on People's Couch Surfing podcast. "And then they stuck with me, which I feel is a real insult. They were like, ‘No, no, you're making the whole not-memorable thing work; we'll just go with that.'"
6. Aunt Viv - Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
This is, without a doubt, one of the most famous recastings of all time. After three seasons as Aunt Viv, Janet Hubert was abruptly replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid.
Then, in 2020, Will Smith and the rest of the cast, including Hubert, sat down for an HBO Max reunion special to discuss the conflict. Smith and Hubert reconciled after 27 years, with the actress stating that she felt mistreated by the actor, who then apologized for his behavior.
Some of our favorite TV shows have given birth to some of our favorite characters. And, of course, the actors behind these characters are the main reason we fall in love with them.
While watching them, we simply can't believe the show would work without them. However, our article proves the opposite.
