It starts with car rides where he says, “Sorry, I don’t feel comfortable sitting next to girls,” and his coworker immediately swaps seats to put an older man between them. Then it’s photo culture, where he refuses to be in casual pictures with just one girl, and at team-building day he flat-out tells another coworker, “I don’t want to pair up with girls,” so he ends up teamed with a guy.

Now he’s stuck wondering if his boundary is coming off wrong, or if he’s the problem for not playing along.

For context, I'm a Filipino male working in the Philippines with all-Filipino coworkers, and I have a girlfriend. Not everyone in my office is aware of my girlfriend's existence, and even for those who do know, they either don't mind being beside me by coincidence or even invite me.

Shipping culture persists in the Philippines, even in the workplace, not just in school. When and how did I bluntly refuse these coworkers?

When I was next to a female coworker in a car, I told her, "Sorry, I don't feel comfortable sitting next to girls..." So she swapped seats in such a way that an older man was between her and me. With that same girl, I refused to appear in casual photos with just me and her.

I always wanted us to either appear alone in separate photos or have a third person in one photo. During an annual team-building activity, I was more blunt toward another girl who wanted to go down a waterslide with me. Without any polite expressions, I said, "I don't want to pair up with girls." (So I paired up with a guy instead.)
I do admit, though, that even if this may be meant as a joke or a way to be "friendly," I don't like it.
