Neighbor Demands I Split Pet Grooming Costs - AITA for Refusing?
Neighbor demands I split pet grooming costs, crosses boundaries, and threatens to report me - AITA for refusing?
A 29-year-old woman refused to pay for her neighbor’s idea of “proper” pet care, and now her street is acting like she committed a crime. The whole thing started when she adopted a rescue dog and, for her own reasons, decided to groom him at home, something she says is relaxing and helps her bond with her new best friend.
Enter Karen, a 38-year-old neighbor who cannot mind her business. She keeps showing up with unsolicited grooming tips, pushes the idea of regular professional grooming, and then escalates fast by booking an appointment without OP’s consent and assuming the costs would be split. When OP says no, Karen claims neglect, threatens to report her to animal services, and starts giving everyone the cold shoulder while spreading rumors.
Now OP is stuck defending her dog care choices, wondering if refusing Karen’s “split the bill” scheme makes her the bad guy. Here’s the full story.
Original Post
I (29F) recently adopted a rescue dog, and I've been enjoying the journey of taking care of him. My neighbor, let's call her Karen (38F), has always been overly involved in others' business.
She constantly comments on how I should groom my dog, what products to use, and even offers unsolicited grooming tips. For context, I prefer grooming my dog myself as I find it therapeutic and it helps us bond.
However, Karen insists that I visit a professional pet groomer regularly and split the costs with her, claiming it's for the dog's well-being. She even went as far as booking a grooming appointment without my consent and assumed I would share the expenses.
I politely declined Karen's offer, explaining that I'm comfortable grooming my dog at home and don't see the need for professional grooming currently. She got visibly upset, accusing me of neglecting my pet and being cheap.
This led to a heated argument where she threatened to report me to animal services for alleged neglect. Now, Karen is giving me the cold shoulder and spreading rumors in our neighborhood about my supposed mistreatment of my dog.
Despite her interference, I stand by my decision to groom my dog at home. So, Reddit, AITA for refusing to split pet grooming costs with my nosy neighbor?

This is similar to the roommate who demanded a grooming cost split after getting a new dog.

Karen’s “just trying to help” grooming lecture turns into a cost-sharing demand the second she decides OP should be going to a groomer on a schedule.
That’s when Karen books a grooming appointment without permission, and OP realizes this is not about the dog, it’s about control.
After OP refuses to split the grooming costs, Karen goes straight to the nuclear option, accusing her of neglect and threatening animal services.
With Karen giving the neighborhood the side-eye and spreading rumors about OP’s supposed mistreatment, OP is left wondering if she really crossed a line.
