Norway Crown Princess’s Son Charged With 32 Offences, Including Four Counts of Rape
Marius Borg Høiby could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of the most serious charges

Norway is facing a royal scandal after it was revealed that Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson to Crown Prince Haakon, has been charged with a series of serious crimes following a year-long police investigation.
The charges against Høiby include rape, domestic abuse, assault, vandalism, and repeated violations of restraining orders. If convicted of the most severe offences, prosecutors say he could face up to 10 years in prison.
The Charges in Detail
According to prosecutors, Høiby is facing 32 separate criminal charges, which include:
Four counts of rape: one involving sexual intercourse, and three without intercourse. Prosecutors say some of these assaults were recorded on his mobile phone.
Domestic abuse against a former partner.
Violence and disturbing the peace, including assault and property damage.
Repeated violations of restraining orders involving another former partner.
The alleged rapes are said to have occurred in 2018, 2023, and 2024—the most recent incident allegedly taking place even after the police investigation had already begun.
Public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo told reporters:
“The maximum penalty for the offences listed in the indictment is imprisonment of up to 10 years. These are very serious acts that can leave lasting scars and destroy lives.”
Henriksbo also emphasized that Høiby’s family connections would not influence the proceedings:
“The fact that Marius Borg Høiby is a member of the royal family should, of course, not mean that he should be treated more lightly or more severely than if similar acts had been committed by others.”

Palace and Legal Response
The Norwegian Royal Palace released a short statement acknowledging the indictment:
“It is up to the courts to hear this case and to reach a decision.”Høiby’s defense attorney, Ellen Holager Andenaes, confirmed that he denies the most serious accusations, including rape and domestic violence. He has, however, previously admitted to struggling with substance abuse.
Høiby remains free pending trial, with prosecutors stating there is currently no reason to detain him before court proceedings.
The charges against Høiby include rape, domestic abuse, assault, vandalism, and repeated violations of restraining orders.

A Troubled History
Høiby, who does not hold a royal title and has no official duties within the monarchy, has been under investigation since August 4, 2023, when he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend.
Just days after his arrest, he issued a public statement acknowledging his long battle with mental health struggles and addiction:
“I acted under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument. I have suffered from mental troubles and struggled for a long time with substance abuse.”This admission has fueled debate in Norway about the role of addiction and mental health in criminal behavior, but prosecutors insist the severity of the allegations requires the full weight of the law.

Trial Expected Next Year
The case is expected to go to trial in early 2025, where judges will decide whether the evidence supports a conviction on the 32 charges.
For the Norwegian royal family, the indictment is a deeply uncomfortable moment. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Høiby’s mother, married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, making her son the stepson of the future king. While Høiby has lived a mostly private life away from royal duties, the seriousness of the allegations has drawn international attention.
If convicted on the most serious counts, he could face up to a decade in prison, marking one of the most high-profile scandals to ever touch the modern Norwegian monarchy.
