As human beings, we have fostered an extraordinary bond with our pets, and abandoning them, let alone in such hazardous circumstances, is absolutely impossible.
Ukraine’s war has forced countless families to make impossible choices, and for many of them, that includes whether their pets can come along. Across train stations, shelters, and border crossings, people have been seen holding cats, dogs, and other animals close as they try to reach safety.
These photos capture that bond in a very direct way. Even in the middle of chaos, many Ukrainians have refused to leave their pets behind, treating them like family members who deserve protection too.
