Student Snaps At Teacher After She Made A Classmate Wait 20 Mins Outside And Refused To Open The Door
“She leaves students outside for 10-15 minutes at a time; no matter how many times the student knocks, she will not open the door.”
One classroom rule turned into a full-blown Reddit debate after a student got fed up with a Spanish teacher who kept making classmates wait outside. What started as a simple delay quickly turned into a question of respect, control, and who was really out of line. That was enough for the Redditor, u/SunShy970, to snap, and the reaction from the class, the teacher, and Reddit was anything but quiet.
The screenshots below show how the situation unfolded, plus the comments that followed. Read on.

That kind of classroom rule was never going to stay quiet for long.
Original Post
My Spanish teacher often makes students wait outside for 10-15 minutes before opening the door, even if we are there on time.
Today, one of my classmates had already been waiting outside for 20 minutes, and the teacher still refused to open the door.
I got annoyed and told her she was being ridiculous for making people stand outside like that.
She got upset and said I was disrespectful.
Now I'm wondering if I went too far.
The teacher felt disrespected by OP's action.

OP decided that enough was enough and took action.

OP modified the post to include an Edit where they replied to the Reddit community.

Edit: I didn't mean to start a huge argument, I was just frustrated because she kept making us wait outside.
I know I probably shouldn't have said it like that, but it felt unfair in the moment.
Then came another clarification, because the comments clearly weren't done with it yet.
OP eventually added a second Edit to clarify matters further.

The reason OP made the post is that they were unsure of themselves.

By this point, the whole thing had turned into a bigger classroom debate than anyone probably expected.
It also echoes the AITA post where a host left dinner guests outside in the rain, then locked the door.

Schoolchildren don't usually have much control over that.

The “I dismiss you, not the bell” teachers are the worst.

Some commenters clearly thought the teacher was the one pushing it too far.
One commenter said the rule made no sense and only gave the teacher more power than she needed.
Another pointed out that students cannot control how long it takes them to get to school, so punishing them for being on time was unfair.
A few others said the teacher should expect students to be inside once the bell rings, not whenever she feels like opening the door.
You can't punish students for something they have no control over.

The school board needs to be informed about this.

The rule doesn't make any sense.

The teacher is deliberately being spiteful.

All students should be inside after the bell rings.

Not all kids live in the area, and some need more time to get to school.

OP went about it the wrong way.

This rule would make more sense in college, but definitely not in high school.

Not everyone thought OP handled it perfectly, though.
One commenter said the teacher sounded spiteful and should not be making students stand outside for no good reason.
They also suggested the issue should be brought to the school board.

The whole mess left Reddit pretty divided.
The student may have snapped, but the teacher's door policy is what really set this off.
