Magic Kingdom’s Next Frontierland Shift Is Not a Ride, It’s the Scenery
Disney World filed a new permit for Piston Peak set elements, marking another step in the Cars overhaul of Frontierland.
Magic Kingdom’s Cars rework of Frontierland just took a step that fans may eventually be able to see, even if Disney still has not shared an opening date. A newly filed permit points to set element installation at Piston Peak National Park, the upcoming land replacing the park’s former waterfront.
A permit signals the next phase
The new filing, dated Thursday, October 15, covers the installation of set elements for Piston Peak National Park. That matters because the project has so far been defined by demolition, utility work, and the reshaping of the area that once held the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.
The permit does not say which pieces are going in, and it does not confirm progress on either of the land’s two attractions. It also gives no opening window. Still, it suggests the project is moving toward the themed environment that will define the new section of Frontierland.

What Piston Peak is replacing
Piston Peak is being built on land formerly occupied by the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. Those offerings closed permanently on July 7, 2025.
The river had been part of Magic Kingdom since opening day in 1971, and Tom Sawyer Island followed in 1973. Their removal has made the Cars project one of the biggest physical changes in the park’s 55-year history.
For guests visiting Magic Kingdom this fall, the immediate effect is that construction walls still line Frontierland’s former waterfront.

What Disney has revealed about the new land
Disney previously shared a model showing how Piston Peak will fit into Frontierland. The land draws from the American wilderness and the world of Cars, with plans for snow-capped mountains, tall trees, waterfalls, rivers, and geysers.
Its structures, including a visitor lodge and Ranger HQ, will use the rustic national park style Disney described as Parkitecture. Trees and rough terrain are also intended to help separate the area from nearby parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square.
The headline attraction is an off-road race through mountain scenery with snowy peaks, steep drops, and geyser fields. Disney has also said the ride vehicles will react to the terrain, and that an original character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, is part of the story.
A second attraction is tied to Miss Fritter from Cars 3. Disney has said the ride will feature a giant Audio-Animatronics figure about the size of a school bus.
Piston Peak is one half of what Disney calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. The other half, Villains Land beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, is planned to add two more major attractions along with dining and shopping.
