Lady Falls Out With Her Perfectionist Pregnant Sister About Her Dog, Gets Banned From Meeting The Newborn
“We’re having a kid; you don’t get an explanation.”
A 28-year-old woman thought she was just trying to be helpful, then her pregnant sister turned it into a full-blown attack about her dog. The whole mess started with texts, escalated fast, and somehow ended with the OP being banned from meeting the newborn. Because apparently, the line between “concern” and “disgusting” depends on how perfectionist your standards are that week.
Here’s the complicated part: the OP’s sister believed the dog wasn’t being taken care of properly, while the OP insisted she was only calling it out because it would add stress during labor and the postpartum days. Instead of landing as supportive, it came off like the OP was putting a “dark cloud” over the baby’s birth. Then the sister accused her of mistreating the animal, called her disgusting, and the fallout got so bad the boyfriend had plans that did not include the OP.
And once that Reddit comment section started weighing in, it was basically impossible to ignore who was really over the line.

The OP kicked things off with angry texts, and her sister immediately accused her of mistreating the dog.
OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the AH:
- In my sister's opinion, the action of not taking care of her animal well enough was inappropriate, and I perhaps shouldn't have brought it back up.
- That action could have caused greater stress for my sister during labor and the days after.

When the sister called the OP disgusting for “putting a dark cloud” over the baby’s birth, the argument stopped being about the dog.
This also feels like the OP who excluded her sister from the baby shower after her parenting criticism.
The boyfriend’s “other plans” made it clear this was no longer a family disagreement, it was a boundary being enforced.
The OP left this somewhere in the comments section
I do think a lot of my reasoning behind trying to explain my feelings was to also try to get her to understand that she never should have been in a position to even be thinking about her dog; she should have been focused on this great thing happening. But again, it's hard for me to tell someone what to do in a situation I've never been in (I have no kids and have not gone through labor).
This is really an overreaction

The OP stepped up to help

After the Reddit post blew up, the OP’s attempts to explain her feelings only made the split between “both are AHs” and “OP stepped up” even louder.
The recent fallout between a woman and her perfectionist sister over the care of a dog highlights a critical dynamic in family relationships. The clash between differing values and expectations is emblematic of how perfectionism can strain familial bonds. The sister's insistence on flawless standards not only affects her own well-being but also creates barriers in her interactions with family members.
By prioritizing open communication and empathy, families facing similar issues can work towards resolving conflicts and fostering stronger connections. Acknowledging the impact of perfectionism may be pivotal in transforming strained relationships into healthier dynamics, especially as new family members arrive, such as a newborn in this case.
Due to the fact that they experience such agony and fear from a subpar performance, perfectionists frequently react negatively to helpful feedback. This was no different for OP's sister, and it left the OP feeling as though her feelings were not being acknowledged.
Redditors understood the OP's plight, and she was declared not the AH. You can share this article with your loved ones so they too can share their own verdict about this story.
To navigate such conflicts, it's vital to foster open communication.
The OP didn’t just lose a debate about a dog, she lost access to the newborn.
