If you've worked at a gas station, then you know all about the carding system when it comes to people buying alcohol.
Even if you've never worked at a gas station, you probably still know how they can get into trouble for selling alcohol without IDing the customer. This isn't just for gas stations but also for other stores; however, gas stations are notorious for sending in secret shoppers to test this.
If you sell alcohol to a minor, it is a misdemeanor that can result in a fine of $4,000, jail time, and/or a suspended license. Ultimately, it's quite a big deal, especially if you work in a gas station, since there are always chances that you'll be secret-shopped by someone under 21 who is trying to catch you off guard.
This can be a little difficult because many people rely on appearances when deciding whether to ID someone or not, but essentially, this isn't how you're supposed to do it, and this is why they get red-carded. "Red cards" are essentially a slip that informs you that you failed the secret shopper test, and if you receive three of these cards, you will be terminated.
