Reddit Debate: Is It Wrong for My Husband to Open My Lorcana Card Boxes?

AITA for telling my husband he was wrong for opening my sealed Lorcana card boxes without permission, even though he claims he replaced them?

A 28-year-old woman thought her sealed Lorcana chapter boxes were untouchable, like little time capsules for her collecting obsession. Then she found out her husband, the guy running a Pokémon-selling stream, had quietly cracked open some of those unopened boxes to stock his livestream inventory.

Here’s what makes it extra messy: the boxes were set aside by her, sealed on a shelf in his streaming room, which he also calls her Lorcana room. He even sells Lorcana now, and when she confronted him, he claimed he “replaced the boxes” like that erased the fact he never asked her first.

Now she’s posting to Reddit, wondering if opening her sealed boxes without permission crosses the line into stealing.

Original Post

I collect Lorcana cards. I have one box from each chapter set aside and sealed.

I never plan on opening these boxes. My husband came up with the idea when I first started collecting.

These boxes sit in our basement, on a shelf, in his streaming room, which he says is also my Lorcana room. I also store my card binders in this room.

He started a stream about a year ago to sell Pokémon cards. When he realized how flooded the market is, he decided to take an interest in my Lorcana cards.

Now he mostly sells Lorcana. I found out last night that he had taken some of my unopened boxes and opened them so he could have product to sell on his stream.

He replaced the boxes before I noticed. AITA for telling him that was basically stealing?

Not only was I upset that he took the boxes and opened them, but he didn't even ask me, and I didn't even get to be the one to open them. He says it's fine because he replaced them.

The Intricacies of Violated Personal Boundaries

When one partner disregards another's belongings, it can lead to feelings of betrayal and resentment, undermining the foundational trust that relationships are built upon. This breakdown of trust can create an emotional rift that may take time and effort to mend.

Ultimately, maintaining personal boundaries is not just about protecting possessions; it is about nurturing the relationship itself.

OP says the boxes were her sealed set from each chapter, and her husband opened them anyway to prep inventory for his stream.

From a psychological perspective, the wife's collecting behavior might be more than just a hobby.

The husband's decision to sell the cards without the wife's consent may reflect the dynamics of power within the relationship. Such actions can often indicate deeper issues related to autonomy and control. Addressing these imbalances is vital for the health of the relationship; couples should engage in discussions about their needs and feelings to foster a more equitable dynamic. This can involve creating a shared understanding of what is acceptable regarding personal belongings and financial decisions.

The part that stings most is that he didn’t ask, didn’t wait for her, and still kept the “this is also your Lorcana room” framing.

This is similar to the fiancé who pushed an open relationship, cheated, then blamed the bride after she called off the wedding.

In the face of such conflict, communication is key to fostering understanding and healing. Couples should prioritize practicing active listening, which involves fully engaging with their partner's words and emotions. Additionally, expressing their feelings openly can help address grievances that may otherwise fester.

Using 'I' statements is another powerful technique that can assist partners in conveying their emotions without placing blame on one another. This approach creates a safer space for dialogue, making it easier to discuss sensitive topics that might otherwise lead to conflict. By integrating these communication strategies, couples can significantly enhance the overall communication dynamic in their relationship, paving the way for deeper connection and improved emotional intimacy.

When she noticed the switch, he had already swapped things back in place, but she still felt like her boundaries got steamrolled.

To prevent future misunderstandings, couples can benefit from a structured approach to communication that prioritizes openness and honesty.
