Refusing In-Laws Dog Inside After Chaos: AITA?
AITA for banning in-laws' chaotic dog from my home, sparking tension? Opinions split on who's in the wrong.
Buddy the dog has officially entered the “not in my house” era, and OP is taking heat from the people who brought him. This is one of those AITA posts where it starts with a cute animal and ends with a toddler almost getting splashed by chaos.
OP (34M) says his in-laws regularly show up with their dog, Buddy, who has already destroyed cat toys, trashed the living room, and chewed up couch cushions. Then came the real disaster: Buddy knocked over a vase, dumped water everywhere, and nearly hit their toddler who was right there playing.
So OP set a boundary, and now the in-laws are acting like he just banned a celebrity from the building.

So I'm (34M) dealing with a situation involving my in-laws' dog, Buddy. They often bring Buddy along when they visit our home, and he's a handful.
Last time, Buddy got a hold of our cat's toys, made a mess in the living room, and even chewed on our couch cushions. The final straw was when he knocked over a vase, spilling water everywhere and narrowly missing our toddler who was playing nearby.
I had to clean up the mess, and it was overwhelming. For background, my in-laws are very attached to Buddy and usually let him do as he pleases, which I've always found frustrating.
They often dismiss his misbehavior as playful antics. After the recent chaos, I put my foot down and told them that I don't want Buddy inside our house anymore.
I suggested they leave him in their car or take turns watching him outside. My in-laws were taken aback and insisted that I was overreacting, saying Buddy is just a lovable goofball.
They argued that it's their right to bring him inside and that I should be more accommodating. But I stood my ground, telling them that our home, our rules.
They left in a huff, and now there's tension between us. I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here.
So AITA?

This also echoes the AITA drama where OP’s friend refused repayment, then OP still claimed they owed him.

The moment Buddy went after the cat toys and turned the living room into a mess, OP’s frustration was basically already fully loaded.
After the vase incident, OP’s “please keep him out” request stopped sounding negotiable, fast.
Instead of backing off, OP’s in-laws doubled down, calling Buddy a lovable goofball and insisting it’s their right to bring him inside.
Now the in-laws are leaving in a huff, and OP is stuck wondering if he crossed the line with his “our home, our rules” stance.

He may have been trying to protect his toddler, but now he’s the one who ruined the family visit.
