Roommate Conflict: Should I Split the Grocery Bill Unevenly Based on What I Ate?
AITA for suggesting my roommates pay more on the grocery bill for their expensive tastes, sparking a debate on fair sharing vs. individual consumption?
Some roommate drama looks like spilled drinks and dirty dishes, but this one went straight to the grocery receipt. OP had a pretty simple setup with Jess and Alex, split the monthly grocery bill evenly, and keep things steady.
Then OP noticed a pattern, she buys cheap staples like pasta, rice, and beans, while Jess and Alex grab pricier stuff like seafood, steak, and organic produce. When it came time to split again, OP suggested itemizing so everyone pays for what they actually ate.
Jess and Alex called it unfair and accused OP of being cheap, and OP decided to stop paying for the “expensive items” entirely, which is how the apartment turned into a tense battlefield.

So I'm (27F) living with two roommates, Jess and Alex (both 25M). We have a system where we split the grocery bill evenly every month.
I've been watching my budget closely, so I've been sticking to basic, cheap groceries like pasta, rice, and beans. Meanwhile, Jess and Alex have been buying expensive items like seafood, steak, and organic produce.
Last month, when it was time to split the bill, I suggested that we itemize it based on what each person consumed. I only took cheap items, so I felt it was unfair for me to pay the same amount as them.
Jess and Alex got upset, saying it's not about individual items but about sharing the cost equally.
I disagreed and said they should pay more since they chose expensive items. They refused and accused me of being cheap and causing unnecessary conflict.
At this point, I felt frustrated and decided not to pay for the expensive items they bought. They covered the extra cost, but tensions are high in the apartment now.
So, AITA?

OP’s “cheap groceries only” plan sounded reasonable until the monthly split meeting with Jess and Alex turned into a full-on argument.
The second OP proposed itemizing based on who ate what, Jess and Alex snapped back that it was never meant to be tracked item-by-item.
When Jess and Alex accused OP of causing “unnecessary conflict,” OP took it personally and refused to cover the pricier groceries.
Now that Jess and Alex already covered the extra cost, the tension in the apartment is still sitting there, right on the counter with the receipts.
