Roommates Pet Damages Costing Me: Should I Charge for Repairs?

WIBTA for asking my broke roommate to pay for pet damages caused by her beloved rabbit, despite her financial struggles?

A 28-year-old woman is stuck paying the price for a roommate’s “happy, healthy” pet rabbit, and it’s getting expensive fast. Her roommate, Emma, insists her rabbit, Bun-Bun, should roam free around the apartment, because keeping the bunny contained is apparently a dealbreaker.

But Bun-Bun’s freedom has turned into a recurring repair bill: chewed laptop charging cables, destroyed shoes, and even a small rug that didn’t survive the latest incident. OP has tried talking to Emma about containment when unsupervised, yet Emma is out of work and living paycheck to paycheck, so she’s not exactly able to absorb more costs.

Now OP is wondering if asking Emma to compensate her for the damage is fair, or if it makes her the bad roommate.

I'm (28F) currently living with my roommate, Emma (26F), and her pet rabbit, Bun-Bun. Now, the issue isn't with Bun-Bun herself, but rather with the aftermath of her mischievous adventures.

Emma always lets Bun-Bun roam free in the apartment, claiming it keeps her happy and healthy. However, Bun-Bun's free reign has led to some costly damages.

Recently, Bun-Bun chewed through my laptop charging cable, rendering it useless. This isn't the first time her chewing habit has caused damage to my belongings.

I've had to replace cables, shoes, and even a small rug due to Bun-Bun's antics. Given Emma's financial situation, she's been struggling to make ends meet.

She lost her job a few months ago and has been relying on odd jobs to pay rent and buy essentials. Emma loves Bun-Bun dearly and sees her as family, so asking her to keep Bun-Bun in a cage or playpen when unsupervised is out of the question for her.

I've tried talking to Emma about the damages and the need for some form of containment for Bun-Bun, but she cited Bun-Bun's happiness as her top priority. I understand her attachment to her pet, but I can't keep shouldering the financial burden of Bun-Bun's destructive tendencies.

I feel torn between wanting to support Emma during her tough times and feeling frustrated about the damages caused by Bun-Bun. So, in light of the repeated damages, WIBTA if I asked Emma to compensate me for the cost of repairing or replacing items damaged by Bun-Bun, even though I know she's currently going through financial difficulties?

I genuinely don't know what the right thing to do is here.

This rabbit chewing through your laptop cable is like Reddit’s debate over whether a roommate who’s hardly home should pay extra for unused utilities.

OP isn’t just dealing with one chewed cable, it’s the whole trail of bunny chaos, and the laptop was only the latest victim.

Emma’s job loss makes the usual “just pay for it” conversation feel like it could land like a punch to the gut.

Every time OP brings up a playpen or keeping Bun-Bun contained, Emma pushes back with the same argument, Bun-Bun’s happiness comes first.

So when OP asks herself whether she should charge Emma for repairs, the real tension is love for Bun-Bun versus the repeated damage to her stuff.
