Roommates Pet Snake Destroys My Clothes: AITA for Refusing Rent?
AITA for refusing to pay rent after my roommate's pet snake destroyed my clothes? Opinions are split on who's at fault in this prickly situation.
A 28-year-old man refused to pay his share of rent after his roommate’s pet snake, Monty, somehow escaped its tank and wrecked his clothes. And honestly, once you picture shedding all over your stuff, it stops being “oops” and starts being “okay, but who’s replacing my wardrobe?”
The whole mess goes down while the roommate is out, Monty ends up in OP’s room, and the damage is real, not theoretical. OP confronts his 26-year-old college friend, asks for compensation, and the roommate responds with defensiveness and zero willingness to cover anything. Then OP escalates, says he won’t pay rent to balance the cost, and now the roommate is threatening to pull the landlord into it.
Now he’s wondering if his rent stand was justified, or if he just turned a snake incident into a full housing war.

So I'm (28M) and I recently moved in with my college friend (26M), who has a pet snake named Monty.
Fast forward to last week, and while my roommate was out, Monty somehow escaped his tank and got into my room. The snake ended up shedding all over my clothes, damaging a lot of them.
I was understandably furious. I confronted my roommate about the incident and asked for compensation for the ruined clothes, expecting him to cover at least part of the cost.
However, he got defensive and argued that it wasn't his fault and refused to pay up. I was so frustrated that I told him I wouldn't pay my share of the rent this month to make up for the damages.
Now he's calling me unreasonable and threatening to involve our landlord. Am I the a*****e here?
I honestly don't know if I'm wrong in taking this stand.

While Monty’s shed was drying on OP’s clothes, the roommate was busy insisting it was “not his fault,” even though the snake came from his tank.
That’s when OP asked for compensation, and the conversation immediately turned into blame instead of a simple “let’s figure out the cost.”
After the roommate refused to pay, OP made the move to skip his rent share, betting it would finally force accountability for the ruined clothes.
Now that the roommate is threatening the landlord over OP’s rent decision, this turned from a Monty escape into a roommate standoff with paperwork.

Nobody wants to be the collateral damage when a pet snake goes rogue, least of all OP.
After Monty wrecked your clothes, see why this roommate wanted her snake to eat his vintage pet food cans.
