Heartfelt And Homemade Gift Causes Unexpected Rift In This Family That Leaves Redditors Totally Perplexed And Outraged
New moms can be a bit sensitive due to postpartum depression.
A handmade Christmas gift turned into an unexpected family dispute, and Reddit had plenty to say about it.
After losing her job during COVID-19, one woman decided to make homemade presents for her in-laws, except for her newborn niece, who got a personalized framed keepsake instead. She cross-stitched a llama and a giraffe, added the baby’s name and birth date, and thought the gift would be a sweet hit at the holiday gathering.
Instead, the reaction focused on one detail, and the family tension escalated fast. Read on.
The original post:
Due to the global pandemic, OP is currently unemployed, so she decided to give out handmade Christmas gifts. She figured it would be best to make some of everyone's favorite foods, like an apple crumble or a jar of jam.
But for the new member of their family, her newborn niece, she decided to go the extra mile. She chose to create a keepsake, and since she had started a new hobby—cross-stitching—this was an easy choice.
So, she created a keepsake with a llama and a giraffe, and she even included her niece's name and date of birth. However, her sister-in-law didn't react positively to the gift.
She said that OP should have consulted her before choosing colors for the present because the color scheme and the llama's outfit didn't match their nursery room colors. She also said that she appreciated the effort, but the present would not be displayed in the nursery room.
This made OP feel very sad. But in the end, there was an unexpected twist that explained everything.
In the original post, OP wrote an update saying that the day after the Christmas celebration, her sister-in-law called her to apologize and thanked her for the gift. She was crying and “was emotionally all over the place since she gave birth,” as her husband said.
OP figured that she might have postpartum depression and even felt guilty for being so sad the day before.

From the numerous comments, we can sum up that the Reddit community firmly backed up the OP. However, there is one thing we should always keep in mind: postpartum depression is a real issue, and many are unaware of it.
Even though there was a reasonable explanation for the sister-in-law’s behavior, this doesn’t diminish the fact that the OP felt lousy. Luckily, the sister-in-law realized her mistake in time and apologized.
