Should I Ask My Sister to Repay Me for Money Lent Under False Pretenses?
"Deceived by a family member's 'financial emergency,' I'm torn about requesting repayment. WIBTA for wanting the truth and my money back?"
It started with a “financial emergency,” tears, and a brother who didn’t want to see his sister struggle. A 28-year-old man stepped in fast, handing his 26-year-old sister a significant amount of money, no big interrogation, no awkward follow-up questions, just pure “I’ve got you.”
But the plot twists are already here. His sister, who has a history of mismanaging money, claimed the cash was for an urgent situation, then somehow ended up on a luxury vacation instead. He only found out through a cousin, not from her, which makes the whole thing feel less like a misunderstanding and more like a straight-up betrayal.
Now he’s stuck weighing one question, should he ask her to repay a loan she didn’t earn with the truth?

So I'm (28M) and I've always been pretty good with money. Last month, my sister (26F) came to me in tears, saying she needed a significant amount of money for a 'financial emergency'.
She was visibly distressed, and I didn't want to see her struggle. So, I lent her the money without hesitation, without asking too many questions.
For background, my sister has a history of mismanaging her finances, but I thought this time might be different. Fast forward to now, I found out through a cousin that my sister actually used the money to go on a luxury vacation instead of resolving the emergency she claimed to have.
I felt betrayed and lied to. I haven't confronted her about this yet, but I'm considering asking her to repay the money since it wasn't used for what she said it was.
However, I'm torn because she's family, and I don't want to strain our relationship. Would I be the a*****e if I asked her to pay me back for helping her out in what I thought was a time of crisis?
So, WIBTA if I asked my sister to reimburse the money I lent her for a financial emergency she didn't disclose?

This is similar to refusing to lend money to a brother after discovering he lied about repaying your parents.

That’s when the “emergency” story falls apart, because the cousin is the one who spills the luxury vacation news, not the sister herself.
The brother’s hesitation makes sense, since he already knows her past with money, and he still wanted to believe this time was different.
After the betrayal lands, the real complication is whether asking for repayment will turn a family favor into a family fight.
And every time he pictures that confrontation, he’s stuck between “she lied” and “she’s still my sister.”

This isn’t just about money, it’s about whether he gets to trust her again after the vacation lie.
