Should I Have Fired My Friend for Sharing Confidential Info at Work?

AITA for firing my friend over a confidentiality breach at work, risking our client's trust? Opinions on whether I overreacted or made the right call vary.

A 28-year-old woman runs a small marketing firm where everyone knows everyone, and that tight vibe is exactly what makes this NDA mess hurt even more. When you work with the same people for years, you assume loyalty comes standard, right up until it doesn’t.

OP did what she thought had to be done, but now Sarah is furious, and the real question is whether firing her was the only move.

I (28F) run a small marketing firm with a close-knit team. My friend, let's call her Sarah, has been with me since the beginning.

We recently landed a major client with a strict NDA. Last week, I caught Sarah sharing details from the confidential project with her boyfriend, who works at a rival firm.

This breach jeopardized our client's trust, risking the entire project. I confronted Sarah, and she admitted the mistake, but I had to let her go.

Now, she's hurt and angry, claiming I overreacted. Did I handle this situation wrong?

So AITA?

OP wasn’t dealing with a vague “oops,” Sarah straight-up talked NDA details to her boyfriend at the rival firm.

The major client’s strict NDA didn’t leave much room for “I’ll just fix it later,” especially after OP confronted Sarah.

Sarah admitted the mistake, but the boyfriend connection turns this from office drama into a real threat to the whole project.

Now OP is stuck between protecting the client’s trust and losing a friend she’s had since the team started.
